Uganda Safari with a 10-Year-Old Child

Planning a Uganda Safari with a 10-Year-Old Child

Are you considering an adventurous Uganda safari with your 10-year-old child? Whether it’s exploring the incredible Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the experience promises to be unforgettable. However, planning a trip like this requires some considerations, especially for gorilla trekking, which has specific age restrictions.

Can a 10-Year-Old Trek Gorillas in Uganda?

The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set the minimum age for gorilla trekking at 15 years, primarily to ensure the safety of both visitors and the gorillas. Children under this age are considered minors and are generally not allowed to participate in this activity. The reasons for this include:

• Safety Concerns: Children may have unpredictable behavior, such as making loud noises or running, which could provoke wild reactions from the gorillas.
• Physical Challenges: Gorilla trekking can be strenuous due to the rough, hilly terrain and slippery trails of Bwindi Forest. Young children might struggle with these conditions.
• Health Risks: Mountain gorillas share approximately 98% of their DNA with humans, making them highly susceptible to diseases like colds and flu, which children might unknowingly carry.

Despite these restrictions, it is possible for a 10-year-old to trek gorillas in special circumstances. A waiver must be signed by the parent or guardian, accepting full responsibility for their child. This ensures the tour operator and UWA are not held liable.

Exciting Activities for a 10-Year-Old During a Uganda Safari

If gorilla trekking isn’t feasible for your child, there are still plenty of exciting activities for them to enjoy:

• Nature Walks: Explore the lush forests of Bwindi or Mgahinga with a guide, where they can spot smaller wildlife and unique plant species.
• Community Visits: Engage with local communities, learn about their culture and participate in activities like traditional dancing or craft-making.
• Wildlife Safaris: Combine your gorilla adventure with a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park or Lake Mburo National Park for game drives to see elephants, lions, zebras and more.

How to Book Gorilla Trekking with a 10-Year-Old Child

To organize a Uganda safari with your child, the first step is securing gorilla trekking permits. These permits are required for all participants and cost:

• $800 for Foreign Non-Residents
• $700 for East African Residents
• $80 for East African Citizens

For children under 15, a waiver is necessary. Permits must be booked well in advance due to limited availability (only 8 permits per gorilla group per day). Trek Africa Gorillas can help with permit reservations and handle all logistics for your safari.

Where to Stay During Your Uganda Safari with Children

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is divided into four sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo. Your choice of accommodation will depend on the sector where your gorilla trek is scheduled. Options range from budget to luxury lodges, ensuring you’ll find something suitable for your family’s preferences.

Here are some recommended lodges:

• Buhoma Sector: Buhoma Community Camp (Budget), Buhoma Haven Lodge (Midrange), Mahogany Springs Lodge (Luxury)
• Rushaga Sector: Rushaga Gorilla Havens Lodge (Budget), Four Gorillas Lodge (Midrange), Rushaga Gorilla Camp (Luxury)
