Gorilla trekking in Africa is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. While it requires effort, such as hiking through forests and navigating challenging terrains, the reward of watching mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is unmatched. Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo are the only places in the world where you can enjoy this awe-inspiring encounter.

At Trek Africa Gorillas, we pride ourselves in organizing tailor-made safaris with Spanish-speaking guides. From booking permits to planning your itinerary, we take care of all the details to ensure a stress-free experience. Whether you’re interested in a standard gorilla trekking adventure (one-hour gorilla encounter) or a more immersive Gorilla Habituation Experience (four hours with the gorillas in Uganda’s Bwindi Forest), we’ve got you covered.

Gorilla trekking is a physically demanding activity that requires some level of fitness, as it involves hiking through dense forests, crossing rivers and navigating muddy terrain. However, the joy of spending time with these magnificent creatures in their natural environment makes it all worthwhile.

Where to Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa: Top Destinations

Gorilla trekking is only possible in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo. These countries host the last remaining populations of mountain gorillas in the world.

Uganda

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Rwanda

• Volcanoes National Park

DR Congo

• Virunga National Park (Mountain gorillas)
• Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Lowland gorillas)

Each of these national parks requires a gorilla permit for access. If you’re planning to travel during the peak season (June to September), we recommend booking your permit at least 5 months in advance, as they tend to sell out quickly. Gorilla trekking can be booked directly through the respective wildlife authorities or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.

Understanding Gorilla Permit Costs Across Africa

Uganda Gorilla Permits

• $800 per person for foreign non-residents
• $700 per person for foreign residents
• $80 per person for East African citizens

Uganda offers 20 habituated gorilla families, 16 in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and 1 in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, allowing for 136 gorilla permits daily. If you’d like a more in-depth experience, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, which costs $1,500 per person and provides four hours with the semi-habituated gorillas.

Rwanda Gorilla Permits

• $1,500 per person for foreign non-residents
• $500 per person for foreign residents

Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park has 12 habituated gorilla families, offering 96 permits daily.

  • $200 per person during the low season (mid-March to mid-May, mid-October to mid-December)
• Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Lowland Gorillas):
  • $400 per person for foreign non-residents
  • $200 per person for East African residents
  • $20 per person for Congolese nationals

What Gorilla Permit Costs Usually Don’t Cover

Gorilla permit costs typically exclude the following:

• Accommodation
• Meals
• Ground transportation
• Airfare
Make sure to discuss the full details of your safari package with your tour operator to avoid surprises.

Age Limits and Accessibility Options for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on the individual’s fitness levels, typically up to 85 years. For older travelers or those with mobility challenges, gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is made easier with the use of sedan chairs. These chairs allow visitors who cannot hike through the forest to be carried by porters to and from the trekking site. The cost for hiring a sedan chair ranges between $400–$500 and can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies in Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo

To participate in gorilla trekking, you need a gorilla permit. If you’re trekking with a Spanish-speaking guide, you’ll also need to purchase a permit for your guide. It’s essential to note that gorilla permits are tied to specific trekking dates and cancellations often come with penalties.

Here’s a summary of gorilla permit cancellation policies:

• 0 to 8 days before trekking: No refund will be issued.

It’s always advisable to confirm the current cancellation policies with your tour operator.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Gorilla trekking can be done year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:

• January and February
• June to early September

During these months, the trails are less muddy, travel to the parks is easier and the vegetation is less overgrown, offering better visibility of the gorillas.
