Overview of the Three Volcanoes

Mount Muhavura

Standing tall at 4,127 meters above sea level, Mount Muhavura is the highest of the three volcanoes in the Gahinga range and offers a challenging yet rewarding climb. Situated on the border between Uganda and Rwanda, the summit features a small crater lake, which can be circumnavigated for stunning panoramic views across the Virunga Mountains. The hike typically takes around 5 to 6 hours to ascend and another 5 to 6 hours to descend, making it a physically demanding experience but one that’s worth every step.

Mount Sabinyo

Mount Sabinyo, standing at 3,645 meters, is the most challenging of the three due to its rugged terrain and multiple craters. Known as “Old Man’s Teeth” in the local language because of its three sharp peaks, Sabinyo offers some of the best views in the region, stretching across Uganda, Rwanda and the DRC. The climb typically takes a full day, with about 4 hours to the summit and 4 hours back down, depending on the pace and weather conditions. The journey takes you through lush vegetation, bamboo forests and rocky ridges, providing a diverse and thrilling experience.

Mount Gahinga

At 3,474 meters, Mount Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes but it still offers an enjoyable hike through stunning landscapes. The trail is the shortest and least challenging, making it ideal for those new to mountain hiking or those who prefer a more leisurely climb. The hike typically takes around 6 hours, including both ascent and descent and is famous for its swampy crater lake at the summit. This volcano is rich in biodiversity, with various species of plants like Alchemilla and Lobelia thriving in the unique high-altitude environment.
