Visiting Gorillas in Congo

Visiting Gorillas in Congo: An Unforgettable Adventure

Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Located in the heart of the Virunga Range, this park boasts some of Africa’s most diverse tropical rainforests. It is home to endangered species such as mountain gorillas, chimpanzees and golden monkeys. Virunga, along with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, forms part of the Virunga Conservation Area, the only region in the world where you can see these critically endangered gorillas. In addition to gorillas, the park also offers sightings of golden monkeys, chimpanzees and several other primate species.

To access Virunga National Park from Kigali (Rwanda), you’ll need to fly into Kigali International Airport and then drive to Gisenyi town. From Gisenyi, you will cross the Rwanda-Congo border into Goma (DR Congo) and take a 2-hour drive to the Virunga National Park headquarters or Kahuzi Biega National Park headquarters, where your gorilla trekking adventure will begin.

Gorilla Trekking Experience and Costs

Gorilla trekking in Virunga National Park is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The trekking day typically begins with a briefing at 7:45 AM, after which you’ll be assigned a specific gorilla group to track. The trek itself takes you through the stunning Virunga rainforest, where you may encounter not just the gorillas but also a variety of birds and other primates. Once you find your gorilla family, you’ll spend an unforgettable hour observing and photographing these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

How to Book Gorilla Permits for Virunga

Booking your gorilla trekking permit for Virunga National Park is simple with Trek Africa Gorillas. Once you confirm your trip with us and make the payment for your permits, we will secure them directly from the Virunga National Park headquarters. We’ll send you a scanned copy of the receipt to confirm your gorilla trek for the specified date. After your permits are confirmed, you can proceed to book your international flights and pay the remaining balance for your trip.

For those interested in lowland gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega National Park, we can also assist with securing permits. However, be aware that due to the limited number of available permits (only 2 gorilla families are open for trekking), they can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons like June, July, August, September, December and February. To ensure you get your desired trekking date, we recommend booking 3-4 months in advance.

DR Congo Visa and Entry Requirements

To visit Virunga National Park in Congo, travelers must secure a visa before arrival. Unlike other African countries like Uganda and Kenya, Congo does not issue visas on arrival. You must apply for a visa through the nearest Congo consulate or embassy. Visa fees are as follows:

• Single entry (1-month validity): $100
• Single entry (2-month validity): $135
• Single entry (6-month validity): $400

It’s recommended to apply for your visa at least 2-3 weeks in advance of your travel date, as visas cannot be processed upon arrival. In addition to your visa, you will need a yellow fever vaccination certificate and an invitation letter. Reach out to us for detailed guidance on securing your Congo visa.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Virunga

Virunga National Park is located in a tropical region, meaning it experiences unpredictable rainfall throughout the year. However, the best times to visit are during the dry season, which runs from December to February and June to September. During these months, the trails are drier and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot the gorillas.

The wet season, which occurs from March to May and October to November, is not ideal for trekking. Trails tend to be slippery and the lush vegetation can make it more challenging to spot the gorillas. For a more comfortable and enjoyable trekking experience, we recommend planning your trip during the dry months.
