Visiting the Golden Monkeys in Uganda: A Unique Wildlife Experience
Visiting the Golden Monkeys in Uganda is a must-do for wildlife lovers. If you’re planning to visit the golden monkeys in Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only place to go! Nestled in the southwest corner of the country, this park offers a rare opportunity to see these beautiful and endangered primates in their natural habitat. Safety is a top priority for both Uganda as a travel destination and our tour services, so you can feel confident and secure throughout your visit.
Discover Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Located in Kisoro District, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park forms part of the stunning Virunga Mountains, which stretch across Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Although it’s Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is packed with wonders, including endangered mountain gorillas and the striking golden monkeys. The park features diverse landscapes, from lush lowland rainforests to bamboo forests and towering volcanic peaks like Mt. Gahinga, Mt. Sabyinyo and Mt. Muhabura.
Mgahinga is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, ensuring strong conservation efforts and a memorable experience for every visitor. It’s a must-visit park for anyone interested in gorilla and golden monkey trekking, offering a chance to witness the beauty of these unique primates up close.
Meet the Golden Monkeys: Uganda’s Endangered Treasures
The golden monkey (Cercopithecus mitis kandti) is one of Uganda’s most fascinating primates, known for its striking golden-orange fur and playful behavior. These rare monkeys are endemic to the Virunga Mountains, making them a unique treasure of the region. In Uganda, the only place you can find them is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
Golden monkeys live in social groups or “troops” that can include up to 100 individuals, led by an alpha male. Their diet mainly consists of bamboo shoots, leaves, seasonal fruits, lichens and flowers. Due to their limited habitat range and declining population, they are classified as endangered, with an estimated 2,000 to 4,000 individuals remaining.
Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga National Park: What to Expect
Golden monkey trekking is a standout activity in Mgahinga National Park and offers an exciting experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Unlike gorilla trekking, golden monkey trekking tends to be a lighter and more active hike, as these monkeys are agile and often move quickly through the bamboo forest.
The experience starts early at 7:00 AM with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the guidelines to follow while trekking. Guided by park rangers, you’ll head into the forest in search of the habituated troops of golden monkeys. Once you find them, you’ll have a full hour to watch, photograph and enjoy their lively antics. This unforgettable experience allows you to witness these rare primates in their natural habitat.
In East Africa, golden monkeys are only found in two places: Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. So if you’re visiting Uganda, don’t miss the chance to see these extraordinary creatures.
Golden Monkey Trekking Permits: Costs and Booking Information
Planning a golden monkey trekking adventure in Mgahinga National Park? You’ll need to secure a trekking permit before you can set off to see these rare and beautiful primates. The activity is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, which oversees all tourism activities in Uganda’s national parks.
The cost of the permit varies based on your residency:
- Non-Residents: $100 USD per person
- Foreign Residents: $90 USD per person
- East African Citizens: 40,000 UGX per person
