Discover Volcanoes National Park: Home of Rwanda’s Mountain Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park, also known as Parc des Volcans in French or Pariki Yigihugu yibirungu in Kinyarwanda, is located in the northeastern part of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. It’s one of the oldest and most significant national parks in both Rwanda and East Africa. The park is renowned for being home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. In addition to these primates, the park hosts a diverse range of wildlife, including various bird species, forest hogs, bushbucks and more.

Volcanoes National Park is part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Bisoke. Gorilla tourism in this park has not only brought international attention but also significantly boosted Rwanda’s economy. With half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas calling this park home, it offers an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts.

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost in Rwanda?

This activity allows you to visit habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, where you can observe how they live, feed and interact. The park has 10 habituated gorilla families that are available for trekking every day. Only 8 visitors are allowed to trek with each gorilla family per day, ensuring an intimate and safe experience.
