What is the Minimum and Maximum Age for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park?

Gorilla Trekking Age Limits in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to travel with children on your gorilla trekking safari to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and are wondering about the age requirements, here’s what you need to know. This guide covers the minimum and maximum age for gorilla trekking in Bwindi, how to book permits, where to stay and why Trek Africa Gorillas is your best choice for planning the ultimate experience.

Minimum and Maximum Age for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

Minimum Age for Gorilla Trekking: Under the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s policy, the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Anyone younger than that is considered a minor and is not permitted to trek mountain gorillas in Bwindi. There are several reasons for this policy:

• Safety Concerns: Children can sometimes be loud or make sudden movements, which may disturb the gorillas. This could trigger a defensive reaction from the gorillas, causing them to act aggressively.
• Health Risks: Gorillas are highly susceptible to diseases that humans carry. Since humans and gorillas share a significant amount of genetic similarity, illnesses such as colds or the flu can easily be transmitted to them, putting their health at risk.
• Trekking Conditions: Bwindi’s terrain is steep, rough and sometimes slippery, which may be challenging for younger children to navigate.

What About Children Aged 15? Children who are 15 years old pay the same fee for the gorilla permit as adults and will join the trekking group, usually with the family they traveled with. To ensure safety, passports are checked and if a child is found to be underage, they won’t be allowed to trek, even if a permit has been secured.

Minors are still welcome on the safari, though. They can be left at the hotel with the guide or participate in activities like nature walks and community visits while their parents go trekking.

Maximum Age for Gorilla Trekking: There’s no official maximum age limit for gorilla trekking in Bwindi, as long as the participant is physically fit enough to handle the trek. For elderly travelers or those with mobility challenges, there are options to make the experience more comfortable:

• Porter Services: You can hire a porter to help carry your backpack and assist you during the trek.
• Sedan Chair Service: For an additional fee (around $300), elderly guests can opt for sedan chair services, where porters carry you into the forest and back. This service is available to ensure that older travelers can still enjoy the trek.

We’ve had visitors in their 70s and even 80s successfully trek to see the gorillas, so age is not a barrier as long as you’re prepared for the adventure.

Gorilla Trekking Experience in Bwindi: What to Expect

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is located in the southern part of Uganda, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s one of only two national parks in Uganda where you can trek and see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Bwindi is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it a prime location for an unforgettable trekking experience.

The park is divided into four sectors, each offering unique trekking opportunities:

• Rushaga (South)
• Buhoma (North)
• Ruhija (East)
• Nkuringo (South)

Each sector has different habituated gorilla families, each led by a dominant male gorilla, known as the silverback. To participate in the trek, you’ll need to secure a gorilla permit valid for your travel dates.

Gorilla Permits in Bwindi are limited to 8 people per family per day, making it essential to book your permit well in advance. Once you secure your permit, you’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family and your group will be led by an experienced guide into the forest.

How to Book Gorilla Permits for Bwindi Trekking

To ensure you have the best experience, booking your gorilla permits well in advance is crucial. At Trek Africa Gorillas, we make the booking process simple for you:

1. Send Us Your Travel Dates: Let us know when you’d like to trek and we’ll check permit availability for those dates.
2. Payment and Permit Reservation: Once we confirm availability, we’ll send you an invoice for payment. Upon receipt of payment, we’ll secure your permits and send you the scanned confirmation from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Tip: It’s always best to book your permits months in advance, especially if you’re traveling during the high season (June to September). The demand for gorilla permits is high and they can sell out quickly.
