What to Pack for Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest

What to Pack for Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest

Are you dreaming of a chimpanzee trekking adventure in Budongo Forest Reserve and wondering what to pack for your trek? Trek Africa Gorillas is here to help you prepare with a list of essentials to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Located in Murchison Falls National Park in northwestern Uganda, Budongo Forest Reserve is a tropical rainforest home to a rich biodiversity, including over 600 chimpanzees. A small group of these chimpanzees has been habituated for eco-tourism, offering a unique opportunity to observe them in their natural habitat. Budongo is also home to other primates like Black-and-White Colobus Monkeys, Olive Baboons, Red-tailed Monkeys and Blue Monkeys, as well as forest elephants, reptiles and butterflies.

The chimpanzee trek typically starts early in the morning with a briefing at the forest headquarters. After being grouped with a park guide and ranger, you’ll begin your trek, which can last from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the chimpanzees’ movements. Once the chimps are located, you’ll spend an hour watching them as they eat, rest and play. It’s a truly magical experience and you’ll have a chance to see other wildlife as well.

Chimpanzee Trekking Packing List: Essentials You’ll Need

While preparing for your trek, we advise you to pack as lightly as possible, keeping in mind the travel and luggage limitations, especially if you’re traveling in a group. Here’s a list of must-have items for your chimpanzee trek in Budongo Forest:

1. Hiking Boots
Trekking to see the chimpanzees involves navigating through a forest with challenging terrain and altitude. Lightweight, comfortable hiking boots are essential to ensure comfort and stability during your trek.
2. Garden Gloves
As you move through the forest, you may need to grab onto branches or trees for support. A pair of garden gloves will protect your hands from thorns and slippery surfaces.
3. Rain Jacket
Being a tropical rainforest, rain is unpredictable, so a rain jacket is a must to keep you dry and comfortable. Even during the drier months (June, July, August and early September), it’s important to be prepared for rain.
4. Long-Sleeved Shirt and Trousers
Wear long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from insects and vegetation. Make sure to tuck your trousers into your hiking boots to avoid safari ants and other insects from crawling in. Jeans are a good option for this.
5. Cameras and Extra Batteries
Photography is an exciting part of your chimpanzee trek. Ensure your camera is charged and ready for the adventure. It’s also a good idea to carry extra batteries, as you’ll have only one hour to capture the chimpanzees in action. Don’t forget to switch off the flash when taking photos to avoid disturbing the animals.
6. Hat and Sunglasses
If it’s sunny, a hat will help protect you from the heat. Sunglasses can also be helpful for shielding your eyes from the sun, though these are optional.
7. Plenty of Water
Stay hydrated by carrying 1-2 liters of water for the trek. It’s important to drink regularly, especially during long treks in hot conditions.
8. High-Energy Snacks
Bring along some high-energy snacks (in addition to the packed lunch provided by your lodge or camp). Energy bars, nuts or dried fruit are great choices to keep your energy levels up.
9. Waterproof Bag
A waterproof bag is essential to keep your photographic equipment safe from rain or humidity during your trek.
10. Walking Stick
Walking sticks are available at the start of the trek and they can be incredibly helpful for navigating steeper or more slippery sections of the trail.
