Essential Items to Pack for Your Chimpanzee Trekking Adventure

1. Hiking Boots
Since chimpanzee trekking involves hiking through a forest with varying terrain, a sturdy pair of lightweight hiking boots is a must. These will help you navigate the forest’s rough paths and uneven ground comfortably.
2. Garden Gloves
Garden gloves will come in handy to protect your hands while trekking. The terrain can get slippery and having gloves will help you grip trees or branches if needed.
3. Rain Jacket
Kalinzu Forest is a tropical rainforest, meaning rain can happen at any time. Even if you’re traveling during the dry season (June, July, August and September), it’s a good idea to carry a rain jacket to stay dry in case of unexpected showers.
4. Long-Sleeved Shirts and Pants
It’s essential to wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect yourself from insects, such as safari ants and other forest elements. Tuck your pants into your hiking boots to avoid insects from crawling inside.
5. Cameras & Extra Batteries
Don’t forget your camera! You’ll want to capture the incredible moments you’ll spend with the chimpanzees. Make sure to charge your camera batteries fully before your trek and bring extra batteries to ensure you don’t miss a single shot. Please remember to turn off your flash while taking photos, as it can disturb the chimps.
6. Hat & Sunglasses
If you’re trekking in a sunny part of the forest, a hat will protect you from the sun. You may also want to bring sunglasses for added comfort and protection.
7. Water
Staying hydrated is important during any trek. Be sure to pack 1-2 liters of water per person to keep refreshed throughout the day.
8. High-Energy Snacks
Trekking can be physically demanding, so it’s a good idea to bring high-energy snacks in addition to your packed lunch. Snacks like nuts, granola bars and dried fruits are perfect for refueling during your trek.
9. Waterproof Bag
Protect your photographic equipment and other valuables by packing them in a waterproof bag. This will help ensure that everything stays dry in case of rain or muddy conditions.
10. Walking Sticks
Walking sticks are provided at the start of the trek at the Forest Headquarters. They can be very helpful when navigating steep or slippery paths, making the trek safer and more comfortable.
