When Is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

When Is the Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is a year-round activity but the best time to go is during the dry months of January, February, June, July, August and early September. During these months, the forest trails are easier to navigate and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the gorillas.

Where Can You Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

In Uganda, gorilla trekking is conducted in two renowned parks:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park
2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Both parks are home to mountain gorillas and to participate in gorilla trekking, you must secure a gorilla trekking permit in advance.

If you’re planning to visit other regions, gorilla trekking is also available in Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and Democratic Republic of Congo (Virunga National Park). Additionally, the DRC offers the chance to see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.

1. Confirm Your Travel Dates

2. Permit Reservation
If permits are available for your chosen dates, we’ll send you an invoice.
3. Payment and Confirmation

To avoid disappointment, it’s recommended to book your gorilla permits 2-3 months in advance, especially during the peak season from June to September, as permits sell out quickly.

How Much Do Gorilla Permits Cost in Uganda?

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• Foreign Residents: $700 per person per trek
• East African Citizens: $80 per person per trek

These permits grant you one hour with a mountain gorilla family. Alternatively, for a more immersive experience, you can book a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, which costs $1,500 per person and allows you to spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas.

Uganda offers 23 habituated gorilla families (16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga), with 136 permits available daily.

Gorilla Trekking Age Limit

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years and there’s no maximum age, as long as the participant is physically fit. For older or less mobile trekkers, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi. These chairs, carried by porters, allow trekkers to enjoy the experience without hiking. Hiring a sedan chair costs $400–$500 and can be arranged in advance or on the trekking day.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies

Gorilla permit cancellation policies vary but typically:

• 0–8 days before the trek: No refund is provided.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

Preparing for gorilla trekking in Uganda is essential to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience. The trekking trails in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga National Parks can be muddy, steep and challenging, especially during the rainy season. Below is a packing guide to help you make the most of your adventure while staying safe and comfortable.

Essential Items to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

1. Comfortable Hiking Boots
A sturdy, comfortable pair of hiking boots is a must. The trails can be slippery and uneven, so opt for boots with good ankle support and grip.
2. Long-Sleeve Shirts and Lightweight Trousers
Wear long-sleeve cotton shirts and lightweight trousers to protect yourself from thorny plants, stinging nettles and biting insects.
3. Gardening Gloves
These are useful for protecting your hands while gripping branches for support during the trek.
4. Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes and other insects are common in the forest, so pack a reliable insect repellent.
5. Rain Jacket or Poncho
Uganda’s weather can be unpredictable, with sudden downpours. A lightweight rain jacket will keep you dry during the trek.
6. Sweater or Fleece
Early mornings and evenings in the forest can be chilly, so pack a warm layer.
7. Hat and Sunscreen
A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen will protect you from the sun during your trek.
8. Binoculars
These are great for birdwatching and spotting other wildlife during your trek.
9. Camera
Don’t forget your camera to capture the unforgettable moments with the gorillas. Bring spare batteries and memory cards as well.
10. Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial, so carry a reusable water bottle.
11. Wet Wipes
Useful for freshening up after the trek.
12. Sandals or Comfortable Shoes
These can be worn at your lodge after the trek for relaxation.
13. Swimwear
Some lodges have swimming pools or hot tubs, so it’s worth packing swimwear.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

By Road

Bwindi is accessible by road from Entebbe or Kampala. The drive to the southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo) takes approximately 8–9 hours. Along the Kabale-Kisoro road, turn off at Muko and follow the signposts for the Uganda Wildlife Authority to reach your lodge.

For a faster option, you can take a scheduled or chartered flight from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kisoro Airstrip.
