Where Can You See Gorillas in Uganda?

Where Can You See Gorillas in Uganda?

If you’re planning a trip to Uganda for gorilla trekking, you’re likely wondering where you can see these incredible animals. In Uganda, mountain gorillas are found in two national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both parks are located in the southwestern region of Uganda, near the border with Rwanda.

To embark on this unforgettable adventure, you’ll need a gorilla trekking permit, which should be booked in advance. Questions like “How do I book a gorilla permit?”, “Where can I buy a gorilla permit in Uganda?” or “What’s the best time for gorilla trekking in Uganda?” are common. This guide answers all these questions and helps you plan your experience.

Gorilla Trekking Locations in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is possible in only a few countries: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). These countries are home to four national parks where mountain gorillas live:

• Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (Uganda)
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda)
• Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
• Virunga National Park (DRC)

In addition to mountain gorillas, you can see lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park in the DRC. Gorilla trekking permits are required for all these parks. For Uganda, it’s recommended to book your permits at least 5 months in advance to secure your spot, particularly during the high season.

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda

Once you’ve confirmed your travel dates, send us an email so we can check the availability of gorilla permits with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). If permits are available for your desired dates, we’ll send you an invoice for payment. After payment is received, we will purchase your permit immediately and send you a scanned copy for your records.

It’s important to book your gorilla permit 2–3 months in advance as they are limited and sell out quickly, especially during the peak season (June–September).

Cost of Gorilla Permits in Uganda

The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda depends on your residency status:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• Foreign Residents: $700 per person per trek
• East African Citizens: $80 per person per trek

These permits allow you to spend one hour observing a gorilla family in their natural habitat.

For those looking for a more immersive experience, Uganda also offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, available only in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. With a habituation permit costing $1,500 per person, you can spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family, guided by trackers and researchers.

When Is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:

• January to February
• June to early September

During these months, the roads are more accessible and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot gorillas in their natural habitat.

What Is the Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on your fitness level, typically up to 85 years. For elderly trekkers or those with limited mobility, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers sedan chair carriers. These chairs allow porters to carry you to and from the forest, ensuring you can still enjoy the gorilla trekking experience. Sedan chairs can be booked in advance or arranged on the day of the trek, with costs ranging from $400–$500.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policy in Uganda

A gorilla trekking permit is mandatory for anyone planning to track gorillas. Cancellation policies for gorilla permits in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo are generally similar. If you cancel 0–8 days before your trekking date, you will not receive a refund.

Packing the right gear is essential for a comfortable and successful gorilla trekking experience. Here’s a recommended packing list:
