Where Can You See Mountain Gorillas in Africa? — If you’re planning an African adventure and wondering where to see mountain gorillas in the wild, Trek Africa Gorillas is here to guide you. Gorilla trekking is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, drawing travelers from all over the world to Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. Despite the cost, effort and challenges involved in reaching these endangered apes, the reward of seeing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is truly unmatched.

What is Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through lush forests, navigating thick vegetation and sometimes crossing rivers and challenging terrain to find a gorilla family. Once you locate them, you’ll have a magical one-hour encounter observing these gentle giants in their natural environment.

For those wanting more time, Uganda offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, where you can spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family, learning about their behavior and conservation efforts.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

Mountain gorillas are found in three countries—Uganda, Rwanda and Congo. These nations are home to four national parks where gorilla trekking is possible:

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda)

Bwindi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to 23 habituated gorilla families. Trekking here offers a chance to explore its diverse flora and fauna, making it one of the most popular destinations for gorilla trekking.

2. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda)

This smaller but equally stunning park is part of the Virunga Volcanoes. It’s home to one habituated gorilla family and offers a more intimate trekking experience.

3. Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)

Located in the Virunga Mountains, this park is famed for its well-organized gorilla trekking experiences. Its proximity to Kigali makes it a convenient choice for travelers.

4. Virunga National Park (Congo)

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to mountain gorillas and offers a rugged, off-the-beaten-path trekking experience.

5. Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Congo)

This park is the only place where you can see eastern lowland gorillas, a different subspecies from the mountain gorillas.
