Each of these sectors offers a unique gorilla trekking experience, with varying landscapes and habituated gorilla families available for visitors.

Gorilla Trekking Permits and Costs in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

To trek gorillas in Bwindi, you need a gorilla trekking permit. Costs vary depending on your residency status:

• Foreign Non-Residents: USD 800 per person
• Foreign Residents: USD 700 per person
• East African Citizens: UGX 300,000 per person

This permit allows you a one-hour encounter with the gorillas once they are located. Due to high demand, especially during peak seasons (January, February, July, August, September and December), it’s recommended to book permits at least 3-6 months in advance.

Gorilla Habituation Experience: A Deeper Encounter in Bwindi

For an even more immersive experience, Bwindi offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, available exclusively in the southern sectors (Rushaga and Nkuringo). This unique activity allows visitors to spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas as they become accustomed to human presence.

• Cost of Gorilla Habituation Permits:
  • Foreign Non-Residents: USD 1,500 per person
  • Foreign Residents: USD 1,000 per person
  • East African Citizens: UGX 220,000 per person

Habituation permits are highly limited, with only four permits available daily, so early booking (2-3 months ahead) is essential.

Gorilla Trekking vs. Gorilla Habituation Experience: What’s the Difference?

The main difference between gorilla trekking and the gorilla habituation experience lies in the duration and the nature of the encounter with mountain gorillas.

• Gorilla Trekking: During gorilla trekking, you spend one hour with a fully habituated gorilla family once they are located in the forest. The trek is done in groups of up to 8 tourists per gorilla family.
• Gorilla Habituation Experience: In contrast, the gorilla habituation experience allows you to spend up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. This activity is conducted in smaller groups of only 4 tourists, offering a more immersive experience as you witness and participate in the process of habituating the gorillas to human presence.

Both activities start early in the morning and require a reasonable level of physical fitness, as the hikes through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be strenuous and involve steep terrain.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The best time for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is during the dry months, which include January, February, June, July, August and early September. During this period:

• Trails are less slippery, making the trek more manageable.
• Vegetation is less dense, providing better visibility of the gorillas.

While it’s possible to trek gorillas year-round, the wet months (March-May and October-November) can make the trails muddy and more challenging.
