Where to See Hippos in Tanzania: Top Parks, Best Time & Safari Packages

Tanzania is one of Africa’s top destinations for spotting hippos in their natural habitat. Known as one of the most fascinating animals to observe during a safari, hippos are abundant in many of Tanzania’s iconic parks and reserves. If you’re planning a safari to see these incredible creatures, here’s a guide to the best places to find hippos in Tanzania.

Top National Parks in Tanzania to See Hippos

1. Katavi National Park

Katavi National Park is a hidden gem for hippo enthusiasts. This seasonal park is known for its vast floodplains that shrink during the dry season, leaving behind pools teeming with hippos. The best time to visit is from August to October, when you can witness large concentrations of hippos crowded into the remaining waterholes.

2. Hippo Pool – Serengeti National Park

Serengeti National Park is one of Tanzania’s most popular wildlife destinations and a great place to see hippos. The Hippo Pool is a must-visit, where you can watch these massive creatures lounging in the water or interacting with each other. Combine your hippo spotting with a walking safari or game drive to enjoy the park’s rich diversity, including wildebeest, zebras, lions, leopards and more.

3. Ngorongoro Conservation Area

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers another excellent opportunity to see hippos, especially in the marshy areas and water bodies within the crater. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is also home to an array of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, lions and the endangered black rhino.

4. Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park is famed for its hippo sightings. Here, you can watch these semi-aquatic animals in their natural habitat, often alongside other wildlife such as elephants, lions and zebras. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with an impressive variety of species like flamingos and pelicans.

5. Other Parks and Reserves

In addition to the above locations, you can find hippos in several other parks and reserves across Tanzania, including:

• Selous Game Reserve
• Rubondo Island National Park
• Arusha National Park
• Saadani National Park
• Mikumi National Park

When Is the Best Time to See Hippos in Tanzania?

Hippos can be seen year-round in Tanzania but the dry seasons offer the best opportunities:

• December to February
• June to October

During these months, water sources shrink, making it easier to spot hippos in large numbers at lakes and rivers.
