Where to See Ostriches in Tanzania

Where to See Ostriches in Tanzania

Tanzania is home to several prime locations where you can spot ostriches in their natural habitat. These large, flightless birds are most commonly found in open savannahs, grasslands and near alkaline lakes. If you’re looking to catch a glimpse of these fascinating creatures, here are the top spots to visit.

Top National Parks and Lakes to See Ostriches

1. Arusha National Park (Momella Lakes)

Arusha National Park is a beautiful and diverse park, famous for its scenic landscapes and wildlife. The Momella Lakes area within the park is one of the best places to see ostriches. These lakes are surrounded by vast plains where ostriches roam freely, providing excellent viewing opportunities.

2. Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park, known for its breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife, is another top destination for spotting ostriches. The park’s expansive plains and grasslands are ideal habitats for these birds and you’re likely to see them in several areas, especially in the northern and central parts of the park.

3. Northern Circuit’s Alkaline Lakes

In addition to Arusha and Serengeti, the northern circuit of Tanzania is dotted with alkaline lakes where ostriches are commonly found. These lakes, with their unique ecosystems, attract a variety of wildlife, including ostriches. Some of these lakes are located in other parks along the northern safari route, such as Lake Natron, where you can enjoy observing the birds in their natural environment.

Best Time for Ostrich Watching in Tanzania

Ostriches can be spotted in Tanzania year-round but the best times to visit are during the dry seasons when wildlife is easier to spot. The ideal months for birdwatching and safari are:

• December to February
• June to October

During these months, the weather is drier and animals, including ostriches, are more concentrated around water sources, making sightings more frequent.
