Which Region of Bwindi Has the Highest Number of Gorilla Families?

If you’re wondering where to trek the most gorilla families in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, the answer is Rushaga. Located in the southern part of the park, Rushaga is home to five gorilla families—the highest number of any sector in Bwindi. This makes Rushaga a fantastic starting point for your gorilla trekking adventure, especially for visitors traveling from Kigali, as it’s easily accessible via Kisoro.

Why Rushaga is the Best Region for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

The terrain in Rushaga is relatively easy to navigate, making it a convenient and rewarding spot for gorilla trekking. In addition to its five habituated families, Rushaga is the only region in Bwindi where you can participate in the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend more time with the gorillas and even observe their daily behavior. Currently, two gorilla families, Bushaho and Bikyingi, are undergoing this habituation process.

Like other sectors of Bwindi (such as Buhoma and Ruhija), Rushaga also offers the opportunity to visit the Batwa community, providing a unique cultural experience for those interested in learning about the traditional ways of life in the area.

The Gorilla Families of Rushaga Sector

Rushaga is home to several fascinating gorilla families, each with its own unique history and characteristics. Here’s a closer look at the gorilla families you can expect to encounter:

Nshongi Gorilla Family

The Nshongi Gorilla Group used to be the largest gorilla group in Bwindi, with over 36 members. However, over time, the group split twice to form the Bweza and Mishaya families. As of now, Nshongi has around 25 members, including the dominant silverback, Nshongi, along with three sub-silverbacks, four blackbacks, seven adult females, six juveniles and four infants. This playful and energetic group is particularly entertaining to watch, especially with the infant gorillas.

Mishaya Gorilla Group

The Mishaya Gorilla Group formed when silverback Mishaya split from the Nshongi group in 2010 after a series of conflicts. Mishaya left with seven members and over the years, the group has grown. Known for its dynamic nature and occasional fights, the group now consists of 12 members, including three infants.

Bweza Gorilla Group

The Bweza Gorilla Group broke off from the Nshongi group in 2013 with just eight members. While there were attempts to reunite Bweza with Nshongi, the group remained independent and is now open for trekking. The group currently consists of one silverback, two infants and a mix of females and juveniles. It’s a fascinating group to watch as they go about their daily activities.

Kahungye Gorilla Family

The Kahungye Gorilla Group was first habituated in 2011 with 27 members. However, within a year, internal disputes caused the group to split, forming the Busingye group. Today, Kahungye has 13 members, with silverback Rumansi at the helm. The group also includes two blackbacks, Rwigi and Ruhamuka, along with several females and juveniles.

Busingye Gorilla Family

The Busingye Gorilla Group was established in 2012 after splitting from the Kahungye group. The name Busingye means “peace,” but ironically, the silverback, also named Busingye, is known for being aggressive and often picking fights with other groups. Originally starting with seven members, the group has grown to eight members, expanding through the addition of females from other families.

Best Time to Trek Mountain Gorillas in Rushaga

Rushaga, located in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, is open for gorilla trekking year-round. However, it’s important to keep in mind that Bwindi is a tropical rainforest and rain can occur at any time.

Best Months to Trek:

• June to August and December to February are the driest months, making these the best times to trek. The lower rainfall makes the trails less slippery and the vegetation easier to navigate.

Rainy Season:

• March to May and November are the wettest months, meaning more rain and slippery conditions. However, some lodges offer discounts during these months, making it a more affordable option for some travelers.

What to Wear and Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Rushaga

Gorilla trekking in Rushaga is an exciting adventure but it requires preparation. Depending on the group you’re tracking, you may find yourself walking long distances through steep, muddy terrain with rain overhead, so it’s important to dress appropriately and carry the right gear.

What to Wear

• Sturdy Footwear: The trails can be challenging, so wearing a pair of sturdy, waterproof shoes or hiking boots is essential.
• Long Pants & Sleeves: To protect yourself from stinging nettles and thorny bushes, wear thick trousers and a long-sleeved shirt.
• Layers: It can be chilly in the early morning, so start your trek with a sweatshirt or fleece jacket. You can remove layers as the day warms up.
• Gardening Gloves: If you plan to grab onto plants or branches for support, old gardening gloves can be helpful to protect your hands from thorns.

What to Pack

• Lightweight, Waterproof Daypack: Carry as little as possible to keep your load light. A waterproof bag will protect your items from rain and mud.
• Poncho or Raincoat: Especially during the rainy season, pack a poncho or raincoat to keep dry.
• Sunscreen, Sunglasses and Hat: These are useful for sun protection, as you’ll be exposed to the elements while trekking.
• Water and Snacks: Carry at least two liters of water and some snacks for the hike. Staying hydrated and energized is key to enjoying the experience.
• Camera Gear: If you bring a camera, make sure it’s well protected from the rain. Use a waterproof bag or seal it in a plastic bag if your gear isn’t waterproof.

Binoculars

You won’t need binoculars to see the gorillas, as they are often very close to you. Bird watchers may want to carry binoculars but the focus of the trek is usually on the gorillas, so only the most dedicated birders will use them during the trek.
