Why Choose Gorilla Habituation Experience Over Gorilla Trekking?

Why Choose Gorilla Habituation Experience Over Gorilla Trekking?

If you’re looking for an extraordinary wildlife encounter, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is your ticket to spending more quality time with the majestic mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Unlike the traditional gorilla trekking, this unique safari allows you to immerse yourself in the lives of these incredible creatures for an extended four hours.

Mountain gorillas are critically endangered, with only a few remaining in the wild, primarily found in four national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bwindi is unique because it offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which lets you engage in activities that help semi-habituated gorillas become accustomed to human presence, ultimately preparing them for normal trekking.

How to Book the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi

To embark on this unforgettable journey, the first step is to secure your Gorilla Habituation Permit, which can only be purchased from the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The permit costs USD 1,500 per person per trek.

Here’s how the booking process works:

1. Contact Us: Let us know your planned travel dates and we’ll check the availability of permits for the Gorilla Habituation Experience with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.
2. Booking Confirmation: If permits are available, we will tentatively reserve them for you and send you an invoice for payment.
3. Payment: Once you make the payment, send us the proof and we’ll finalize the permit reservation.
4. Permit Delivery: After securing your permit, we’ll send you a scanned copy for your records.

Please note that the Gorilla Habituation Experience is conducted in small groups of four tourists accompanied by park rangers and researchers. There are only two semi-habituated gorilla groups available for this experience, resulting in just eight permits daily. Due to high demand, we recommend booking your permits at least 3 to 5 months in advance to avoid disappointment.

How Much Does a Gorilla Habituation Experience Tour Cost?

The total cost of a Gorilla Habituation Safari can vary based on your travel style—luxury, mid-range or budget—as well as your itinerary and duration of stay. The primary expense is the Gorilla Habituation Permit at USD 1,500 per person.

Here’s a quick breakdown of additional costs:

• Accommodation:
  • Budget: USD 100 per night
  • Mid-Range: USD 200 per night
  • Luxury: USD 300 – USD 700 per night
• Transport and Services: Costs may include transportation in a 4×4 safari van, an English-speaking driver-guide and drinking water.

For instance, a 3-Day Gorilla Habituation Budget Safari might cost:

• USD 3,000 for a solo traveler
• USD 2,490 per person for two sharing
• USD 2,470 per person for three sharing
• USD 2,450 per person for four sharing

This package includes the Gorilla Habituation Permit, budget accommodation, transport and guiding services but excludes tips, Uganda visa fees, flights and alcoholic beverages.

What is the Best Time for a Gorilla Habituation Experience in Uganda?

If you’re planning a Gorilla Habituation Safari in Uganda, you’ll be pleased to know that this incredible experience can be enjoyed year-round at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. However, the best time to embark on your adventure is during the drier months: January, February and from June to early September. During these periods, access to the park is easier and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the gorillas.

Interestingly, the rainy season also has its perks. With abundant food sources growing due to the rain, gorillas may be spotted with ease, as they tend to stay within shorter distances while foraging. This means that even during wet months, you can still have a rewarding experience.

How to Get to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

To reach Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, you can start your journey by flying into Entebbe International Airport. From there, you can travel by road to southwestern Uganda, passing through the local towns of Masaka, Mbarara, and Kabale—a journey that takes about 9 to 10 hours.

Alternatively, you can opt for a flight to Kisoro Airstrip for quicker access to the southern part of the park. If you’re flying into Kigali International Airport, you can drive to southwestern Uganda via the Cyanika or Katuna Border, which takes about 4 to 5 hours, including immigration time.

For those traveling between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda, we recommend obtaining the East African Visa. This visa allows multiple entries into these countries and is more cost-effective at USD 100. You can acquire it upon arrival at the airport or online. Single-entry visas are also available: the Rwandan Visa costs USD 30, while the Ugandan Visa is USD 50.
