Why Do Gorillas Beat Their Chests?

Why Do Gorillas Beat Their Chests?

Gorillas beat their chests as a form of non-vocal communication, primarily used by silverback gorillas (adult males). This behavior serves two main purposes:

1. Attracting females during mating displays.
2. Intimidating rivals or perceived threats by showcasing strength and dominance.

Chest beating is a long-distance signal often used in the dense forests where gorillas live. While infant gorillas may also beat their chests, they do so as part of mimicking adults and practicing behaviors they will use later in life.

If you’re curious to observe this fascinating behavior firsthand, gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers the perfect opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, being a tropical forest, experiences rainfall throughout the year. However, the best time for gorilla trekking is during the drier months: January, February, June, July, August and early September. These months generally have less rainfall, making trekking paths more accessible and the overall experience more enjoyable.

That said, gorilla trekking is possible year-round. Interestingly, the rainy season can also be a good time to visit, as gorillas tend to stay closer due to the abundance of food. During this time, you may find it easier to spot them. Regardless of when you plan to visit, it’s important to book your gorilla permits well in advance since they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons.
