What is the Wildebeest Migration?
The Great Migration is one of the most remarkable wildlife events in the world. Over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras travel a 3,000-kilometer circuit each year. From the southern plains of Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater, they move north into Kenya’s Masai Mara and then return to Serengeti. This migration isn’t just any journey – it’s a life-and-death struggle driven by the search for fresh grazing grounds and water. Along the way, the wildebeests and zebras rear their young and their migration provides ample opportunity for predators like lions, hyenas and cheetahs to hunt.
Witnessing this natural phenomenon is a must for any traveler visiting Kenya or Tanzania – it’s truly one of the best African safari experiences you’ll ever have.
When is the Best Time to See the Great Migration in Tanzania?
The best time to witness the Great Migration in Tanzania is during the dry season from July to early October. As the vegetation in southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater becomes sparse, the herds move northward into the Masai Mara, seeking fresh grazing and water. The wildebeests and zebras face a grueling 3,000-mile journey filled with danger, exhaustion and predators. This is also the ideal time to witness dramatic river crossings.
If you’re looking for the most exciting time, August and September are the peak months to see the Great Migration, with thrilling river crossings and a high concentration of wildlife. By late October, the rains begin and the herds start their journey back south.
When is the Best Time to See the Great Migration in Kenya?
The best time to witness the Great Migration in Kenya is also during the dry season, from July to October. The dry conditions in the southern Serengeti force the herds to move north to Masai Mara in search of food and water. As the wildebeests and zebras journey across the plains, they face numerous challenges, from predators to the harsh environment. This is also the prime time to experience the dramatic river crossings.
Like Tanzania, the months of August and September offer the most action, including thrilling river crossings. By October, the rains begin in Tanzania, signaling the start of the migration’s return to Serengeti.
