What Is the Wildebeest Migration? Understanding the Great Migration
The Great Migration is an extraordinary event that takes place every year, involving over 1.5 million wildebeests and thousands of zebras. These animals travel from the southern Serengeti plains and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania to the northern Masai Mara in Kenya and then back again. This unique migration covers a remarkable 3,000 kilometers as the wildebeests and zebras search for fresh grazing grounds and rear their young.
The migration occurs during the dry season, which forces the animals to move in search of food and water. The journey is challenging and many of the animals face exhaustion and danger along the way. The migration presents an epic safari opportunity and is considered one of the top reasons to visit Kenya and Tanzania for an authentic African safari experience.
When Is the Best Time to See the Great Migration?
Best Time to See the Great Migration in Tanzania
The best time to see the Great Migration in Tanzania is during the dry season, from July to early October. During this period, the southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater become dry, with limited vegetation and water, forcing the wildebeests and zebras to move north to the Masai Mara. This is when the migration is at its most dramatic, with many animals giving birth along the way.
August and September are particularly great months to witness the migration, as this is when you can also see the iconic river crossings, where wildebeests brave crocodile-infested waters in their quest for food and water. By late October, the rains start in Tanzania and the herds begin their journey back to the southern Serengeti.
Best Time to See the Great Migration in Kenya
In Kenya, the best time to experience the Great Migration is also between July and early October. This is when the wildebeests and zebras reach the southern part of the Masai Mara. The dry season forces the animals to migrate in search of fresh grazing and the river crossings during this time are unforgettable. August and September are particularly good months for migration sightings, including river crossings and by late October, the herds start their return to Tanzania.
