Your Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking Fitness and Preparation

Gorilla trekking in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and other national parks is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure but it’s important to be physically prepared. The trek can be demanding, with varying conditions depending on the gorillas’ movement that day, terrain challenges and the time spent trekking. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure you’re fit, prepared and ready for the adventure.

How Fit Should You Be for Gorilla Trekking?

Gorilla trekking is suitable for individuals with a moderate level of fitness or better. The terrain is often steep, slippery and covered with thick vegetation, so it’s important to be in good shape. Treks can range from a few hours to up to 8 hours or more, often in high-altitude conditions, which can make the hike more challenging. To ensure a smooth experience, it’s advisable to prepare ahead of time by training for a few months before your trek if you’re not already physically active.

What to Expect on the Gorilla Trekking Trail

The trek conditions can vary from day to day. The gorillas move continuously through the rainforest, so some treks may be easier, while others may require more effort. As the terrain is often rugged and without marked trails, it can be strenuous at times. Hot weather and the high altitude also play a role in making the trek physically demanding.

For those concerned about the physical challenges, we recommend hiring a porter on the day of the trek. Porters are local guides who assist with carrying your backpack and they also offer pulling and pushing assistance if needed. Another helpful tool is the walking stick, provided at the start of the trek, which offers support on difficult sections.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

The best months to go for gorilla trekking are during the drier seasons of January, February and June to early September. During these months, the trails are less muddy and the vegetation is less dense, making it easier to spot the gorillas. The drier conditions also make travel to Bwindi smoother, ensuring a more comfortable experience.
