Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, an Excursia Adventures guide will welcome you and transfer you to a comfortable hotel in Moshi for an overnight stay. In the evening, you’ll receive a detailed briefing on your upcoming trek.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
- Elevation: 5,400 ft to 9,400 ft
- Distance: 11 km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
Your journey begins with a drive from Moshi or Arusha to Machame Gate, where you’ll complete registration and meet your trekking crew. The trail winds through lush rainforest, with towering trees and diverse wildlife. Be prepared for muddy and slippery paths as you ascend to Machame Camp.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
- Elevation: 9,400 ft to 12,500 ft
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
- Habitat: Moorland
After breakfast, the trail steepens as you leave the rainforest and enter the heather-covered moorlands. The views become increasingly dramatic as you climb higher, eventually reaching Shira Camp, where you’ll enjoy dinner and rest under a stunning night sky.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
- Elevation: 12,500 ft to 13,000 ft
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
- Habitat: Semi-desert
This day focuses on acclimatization. You’ll ascend to Lava Tower (15,190 ft), an iconic rock formation, before descending to Barranco Camp. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps your body adjust to the altitude, improving your chances of a successful summit.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Elevation: 13,000 ft to 13,100 ft
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
The day starts with a thrilling climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable scramble. Once at the top, the route leads through alpine terrain to Karanga Camp, where you’ll rest before the final push to the summit.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Elevation: 13,100 ft to 15,300 ft
- Distance: 4 km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
The trail continues towards Barafu Camp, your base for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, you’ll rest and prepare for the final ascent, starting just after midnight.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit (Uhuru Peak) to Mweka Camp
- Elevation: 15,300 ft to 19,341 ft (Uhuru Peak) and descent to 10,000 ft
- Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
- Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 4-6 hours descent
- Habitat: Glacial summit to rainforest
You’ll begin your summit attempt in the dark, using headlamps to navigate the steep and rocky path to Stella Point (18,600 ft). After a short rest, the final stretch to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft) awaits. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable experience, offering panoramic views from the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement, you’ll descend to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved rest.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi
- Elevation: 10,000 ft to 5,400 ft
- Distance: 10 km
- Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
- Habitat: Rainforest
The final descent leads through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will transfer you back to Moshi for a celebratory meal and overnight stay.
Day of Departure
After breakfast, our team will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or your next adventure.
