Known as Parc des Volcans in French and Pariki Yigihugu yibirungu in Kinyarwanda, Volcanoes National Park is situated in the northeastern part of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. This remarkable park is not only one of Rwanda’s major national parks but also one of the oldest in Africa. It serves as a sanctuary for endangered species, including the magnificent mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, as well as a diverse array of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife.
Part of the Virunga Conservation Area, the park encompasses five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Bisoke. Managed by the Rwanda Development Board, the park plays a crucial role in protecting the mountain gorillas, which have been threatened by poaching and habitat loss. Its proximity to Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park enhances conservation efforts across the region.
Gorilla trekking is the main attraction in Volcanoes National Park, and it operates daily throughout the year. Early morning drives from Lake Kivu to Volcanoes National Park make it possible for you to join a gorilla trek on the same day. During the trek, you’ll have the unique opportunity to observe these habituated mountain gorillas in their natural habitat—watching them feed, rest, and interact.
The park hosts ten habituated gorilla families, with a limit of eight visitors allowed per family each day. Thanks to expert guides, trackers, and park rangers, your chances of encountering the gorillas are an impressive 99%. Trekking typically begins in Kinigi at 7:00 AM with a briefing on the guidelines to follow during your visit. Although gorillas share 99% of our DNA, they remain wild animals, so it’s essential to adhere to the dos and don’ts provided by your guides. The duration of the trek can range from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements.
To participate in gorilla trekking, you must obtain a Rwanda gorilla permit, which costs USD 1,500 for all nationals. This permit allows for one hour of viewing and photography once you find the gorillas. Booking your gorilla trek with Trek Africa Expeditions will ensure a memorable experience that completes your travel bucket list.
Another exciting activity you can enjoy from Lake Kivu is golden monkey tracking. This experience involves visiting the rare and beautiful golden monkeys in their natural environment. Volcanoes National Park has two habituated golden monkey communities, each with around 80 members, and there are no visitor limits.
A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 and can also be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board. Like gorilla trekking, this activity starts at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM, with a briefing on the guidelines. Once you’re ready, park guides will lead you into the forest, where you may walk for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to locate the monkeys. You’ll have one hour to observe and enjoy these charming creatures before returning.
One of the most memorable activities in Volcanoes National Park is the hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb. This one-hour trek starts from the Karisoke Research Camp and takes you through stunning landscapes to the final resting place of the renowned primatologist and zoologist, Dian Fossey. Fossey dedicated her life to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas and raising awareness about their plight. Tragically, she was killed by alleged poachers and was buried in the park, where a memorial has been erected in her honor. She is also well-known for her role in the film “Gorillas in the Mist.” The hike, which reaches altitudes of about 2,500 to 3,000 meters, not only commemorates Fossey’s work but also celebrates her passion for gorilla conservation, making it a truly enriching experience.
