About Volcanoes National Park

Known as Parc des Volcans in French and Pariki Yigihugu yibirungu in Kinyarwanda, Volcanoes National Park is situated in the northeastern part of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. The duration of the trek can range from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements.

To participate in gorilla trekking, you must obtain a Rwanda gorilla permit, which costs USD 1,500 for all nationals. This permit allows for one hour of viewing and photography once you find the gorillas. Golden Monkey Tracking

A golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 and can also be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board. Like gorilla trekking, this activity starts at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM, with a briefing on the guidelines. Once you’re ready, park guides will lead you into the forest, where you may walk for anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to locate the monkeys. You’ll have one hour to observe and enjoy these charming creatures before returning.

Visiting the Dian Fossey Tomb and Hike

One of the most memorable activities in Volcanoes National Park is the hike to the Dian Fossey Tomb. This one-hour trek starts from the Karisoke Research Camp and takes you through stunning landscapes to the final resting place of the renowned primatologist and zoologist, Dian Fossey. Fossey dedicated her life to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas and raising awareness about their plight. Tragically, she was killed by alleged poachers and was buried in the park, where a memorial has been erected in her honor.
