Also known as Parc Des Volcans in French and Pariki Yigihugu y’ibirungu in Kinyarwanda, Volcanoes National Park is located in the northeastern region of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. This park is one of the oldest and most significant national parks in both Rwanda and East Africa. It serves as a sanctuary for endangered species, including the majestic mountain gorillas and playful golden monkeys. The park is also home to various bird species, monkeys, forest hogs, bushbucks, and a rich tapestry of flora.
As part of the Virunga Conservation Area, Volcanoes National Park encompasses five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi, and Bisoke. Managed by the Rwanda Development Board, the park was established to protect the mountain gorillas, which were once threatened by poaching and habitat loss. The collaboration between Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in conservation efforts has greatly benefited these endangered species.
To fully enjoy the gorilla trekking experience, plan to spend at least one night in Volcanoes National Park. The iconic mountain gorillas are the main attraction, with treks occurring daily throughout the year. Gorilla trekking allows you to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, witnessing how they feed, interact, and move about. With 10 habituated gorilla families available for trekking, only eight visitors are permitted per family each day. The success rate for spotting gorillas is an impressive 99%, thanks to the skilled trackers, guides, and park rangers who accompany you.
Treks begin each day at 7:00 AM with a briefing on safety guidelines. While mountain gorillas share 99% of our DNA, they are still wild animals, so it’s essential to adhere to the instructions provided by your guides. Depending on the gorillas’ location, treks can last from 30 minutes to several hours.
To participate in gorilla trekking, you must secure a Rwanda gorilla permit, priced at USD 1,500 for all nationals. This permit allows you one hour of viewing and photographing the gorillas. Booking a gorilla trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and Trek Africa Expeditions can help you create an affordable and memorable tour.
Add an extra thrill to your itinerary by tracking the rare and stunning golden monkeys. This experience involves visiting two habituated golden monkey communities, each with around 80 members. Unlike gorilla trekking, there is no limit on the number of visitors for this activity. The golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100, and it can be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board.
The adventure starts at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM with a briefing from park wardens. After that, guides lead you through the forest to find the monkeys, a journey that may take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Once located, you can observe these playful creatures for one hour before returning.
A visit to Dian Fossey’s Tomb is a must for anyone interested in the park’s history. This hike takes about an hour from the Karisoke Research Camp and pays tribute to the renowned primatologist who dedicated her life to protecting mountain gorillas. Fossey’s work raised awareness of the need for conservation, and she was tragically killed by poachers. Her tomb is located within the park, and a memorial honors her legacy. This hike, ranging from 2,500 to 3,000 meters, not only offers stunning views but also a chance to celebrate Fossey’s passion for gorilla conservation and the impact she made on wildlife protection.

Chimpanzee trekking begins in the morning and is conducted in small groups of up to eight people. Nyungwe Forest is home to the largest population of chimpanzees in Rwanda, with around 400 individuals. Trekking permits are available at $100 per person per trek, making this a once-in-a-lifetime experience in one of Africa’s oldest forests.

Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering
which blog platform are you using for this site? I’m getting fed up
of WordPress because I’ve had problems with hackers and I’m looking at options for another
platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
