How to Book Uganda Gorilla Permits — Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Uganda? Here’s everything you need to know about booking gorilla permits for an unforgettable experience with mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Booking permits in advance is essential, as there are limited spots available each day, and they sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons.
Once you have confirmed your travel dates, reach out to us via email. We will check the availability of gorilla permits through the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for your preferred dates. If permits are available, we will send you an invoice for payment. Once payment is received, we will secure your permits and send you a scanned copy to confirm your booking. It’s recommended to secure your permits at least 2-3 months in advance since spaces are limited and go on a first-come, first-served basis.
Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo are home to the only remaining mountain gorillas, residing in four national parks: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Virunga National Park in DR Congo. Uganda also offers the chance to trek for lowland gorillas in Kahuzi-Biega National Park.
A gorilla permit is required for all gorilla trekking experiences. To ensure availability, especially during the peak season from June to September, we recommend booking your gorilla trek at least five months in advance. You can book your experience directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority or through a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Expeditions.
The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda varies by residency:
These permits allow for a one-hour encounter with a gorilla family in Bwindi or Mgahinga. Uganda offers a total of 136 daily permits across 17 gorilla families—16 in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga. For a longer experience, you can opt for the Gorilla Habituation Experience in Bwindi, where you’ll spend four hours with semi-habituated gorillas under the guidance of researchers. This unique experience costs $1,500 per person.
To book a permit, you can either go directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or with a reliable tour operator like Trek Africa Expeditions, who can handle all arrangements on your behalf.
The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years. While there is no strict maximum age limit, participants should be reasonably fit. For elderly travelers or those with mobility issues, Bwindi National Park offers sedan chair services, where porters can assist in carrying guests into and out of the forest. The cost for sedan chair services ranges from $400 to $500, and they can be booked in advance or on the day of the trek.
Gorilla permits are non-refundable if canceled within 0-8 days of the trek date. Therefore, it’s essential to plan carefully and commit to your chosen dates.

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available year-round, but the ideal time to go is during the dry seasons from January to February and June to early September. These months provide the best trekking conditions, with easier access to the parks and better visibility of the gorillas due to lower vegetation. The drier trails also make for a more comfortable trek.
Preparing well for your trek ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Here’s what to bring:
Packing these items will ensure you’re comfortable, well-prepared, and able to fully enjoy your gorilla trekking adventure.
