If you’re considering a gorilla trekking adventure, both Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo are incredible destinations within the Virunga Mountain ranges. Both parks offer the chance to see the endangered mountain gorillas, stunning volcanic landscapes, and lush forest vegetation, perfect for hiking and adventure. However, there are a few key differences between the two that might influence your decision on where to go for your trek.
Both Mgahinga and Virunga provide similar trekking experiences, as both parks are located in the Virunga mountain range, known for their bamboo forests that create perfect habitats for the mountain gorillas. The vegetation in both parks is quite similar, making trekking relatively easy and offering great opportunities for clear photographs. You’ll get close encounters with gorillas in both parks, as the thick vegetation gives you good visibility of these majestic creatures.
Mgahinga and Virunga can both be easily accessed from Kigali, Rwanda. This is the most convenient route for both parks, as it reduces the long travel time from Entebbe. It used to take around 10 hours to reach Mgahinga from Entebbe, but now with tours organized through Kigali, it’s only a 4-5 hour drive. You’ll also need an East African Tourist Visa, which allows you to visit both Uganda and Rwanda on one visa.
Virunga National Park, located in Congo, can also be accessed from Kigali, but it involves crossing the border into Congo. Travel times from Kigali are typically 2-3 hours.
Both parks offer a range of accommodation options, from budget to luxury. However, if you’re looking for top-tier lodges, Mgahinga stands out with its luxury options. Notable luxury lodges in Mgahinga include Gahinga Lodge and Chameleon Hill Lodge, which provide exceptional service and comfort, making them a great choice for those looking to indulge. In contrast, Virunga National Park offers a wider range of budget, mid-range, and luxury lodges but lacks the same level of high-end accommodation as Mgahinga.
In terms of the number of gorilla families, Virunga National Park has a greater selection, with 8 habituated gorilla families. This means there are 64 permits available every day for trekking. On the other hand, Mgahinga only has one gorilla family, the Nyakagezi group, with just 8 permits available daily.
Despite the difference in the number of families, both parks offer incredible opportunities to see gorillas in the wild, with a 98% chance of seeing gorillas in both locations.
When it comes to price, Virunga National Park is more affordable compared to Mgahinga. The cost of a gorilla trekking permit in Virunga is $400 during the high season (mid-December to mid-March and June to October) and $200 during the low season (mid-March to mid-May and mid-October to mid-December).
In Mgahinga, a gorilla permit costs $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and 300,000 Ugandan Shillings for East African citizens.
Despite the difference in price, the experience of trekking and spending an hour with the mountain gorillas is the same in both parks.
When it comes to safety, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is generally considered safer. The security situation in Congo has been unstable at times due to political conflicts and unrest, which has affected tourism. In Uganda, however, Mgahinga has been able to maintain a stable and secure environment for visitors. Armed rangers escort trekkers in Mgahinga for safety, and security measures are robust.
The trekking experience can vary depending on the gorilla family assigned to you on the day of your trek. The distance walked can vary from short to long treks depending on the location of the gorillas. If you’re looking for a shorter trek, you can request a gorilla family that’s closer to the starting point. However, the behavior of the gorillas may affect the trek, as they may move further into the forest, increasing the walking distance.
The best time for gorilla trekking in both parks is between June and August and December to February, when the weather is drier, and the trails are less slippery. While trekking is possible year-round, the rainy seasons (March to May and November) may cause muddy conditions, but it’s a good time to get discounts at some lodges.
