Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park
Murchison Falls National Park, located at the northern end of the Albertine Rift valley, is a testament to Uganda’s rich natural heritage. Originally established as a game reserve in 1926 and upgraded to park status in 1952, it stands as one of Uganda’s oldest and largest protected areas. Encompassing a vast expanse of 5,072 km², including the continuous Karuma and Bugungu Wildlife Reserves, the park is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. It is home to 76 species of mammals and over 451 species of birds, thriving amidst its diverse ecosystems.
Murchison Falls – The World’s Greatest Waterfall
At the heart of Murchison Falls National Park lies its crowning jewel—the world-famous Murchison Falls. Here, the Victoria Nile dramatically narrows from up to 1 km wide to just 6 meters, plunging 45 meters down a narrow gap in the rift valley cliffs. This powerful cascade marks the culmination of the river’s journey, transforming its raging waters into a tranquil flow that meanders across the rift valley floor towards Lake Albert. The falls create a breathtaking spectacle, attracting visitors from around the globe to witness this natural wonder.
Activities and Attractions in Murchison Falls National Park
Paraa
Paraa serves as the central hub and starting point for exploration within Murchison Falls National Park. It is where boat trips embark to journey upstream towards the falls and downstream to the Nile Delta. The area is also known for its vehicle ferry crossing, facilitating access to various parts of the park. Many of the park’s accommodations are situated along the riverbank near Paraa, offering convenient access to wildlife viewing and park adventures.
Murchison Falls Boat Cruise
A highlight of any visit is the iconic boat cruise departing from Paraa, heading upstream along the Victoria Nile towards Murchison Falls. This historic excursion provides a 3-hour round-trip adventure, offering unparalleled views of the wildlife-rich riverbanks. Visitors can spot elephants, buffalos, hippos, and crocodiles in their natural habitat as the boat navigates through the serene waters towards the thundering cascade at the head of Fajao Gorge.
Top of the Falls
For an unforgettable experience, visitors must venture to the Top of the Falls viewpoint. Here, amid the roar of the cascading waters, one can witness the immense power of Murchison Falls up close. While accessible by vehicle, the more rewarding approach involves disembarking from the boat to hike through Fajao Gorge, soaking in the sights and sounds of this natural wonder.
Delta Boat Cruises
Boats departing from Paraa also journey downstream to explore the Nile Delta, where a labyrinth of papyrus islands filters the river’s flow into Lake Albert. This biodiverse region is a haven for water birds, including the iconic shoebill stork, offering birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
Sport Fishing
The waters below Murchison Falls offer a thrilling challenge for fishing enthusiasts, particularly for those aiming to land the legendary Nile Perch. The record catch with rod and line stands at an impressive 108kg, highlighting the allure of this activity in one of Africa’s most iconic national parks.
Game Viewing
Buligi Peninsula
Murchison Falls National Park’s premier game viewing area is situated on the Buligi Peninsula, defined by the confluence of the Victoria Nile entering Lake Albert and the Albert Nile flowing out of it. This triangular expanse of grassland provides a habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, and giraffes. Lucky visitors may even spot the elusive lion or leopard roaming the savannah.
Hot Air Balloon Safaris
For a truly unique perspective, visitors can take to the skies in a hot air balloon to explore the expansive plains north and west of Paraa. Organized by Jobihani Dream Balloons office at Paraa Safari Lodge, this aerial adventure offers unparalleled views of the park’s landscapes and wildlife, creating lasting memories from high above.
Heart of Murchison
While much of southern Murchison Falls National Park is characterized by bush and forested areas, the heart of the park unfolds into a picturesque savannah. Recently opened vehicle tracks traverse this region, renowned for its large herds of Uganda Kob. This area has gained recognition as a prime location for observing lions in their natural habitat, adding excitement to game drives and safaris.
Forest Walks and Chimpanzee Tracking
Kaniyo Pabidi Forest
Located in the southern part of Murchison Falls Conservation Area, Kaniyo Pabidi Forest is home to a habituated group of chimpanzees that can be tracked with the guidance of experienced forest guides. Beyond chimpanzees, the forest is a haven for birdwatchers seeking Albertine Rift endemics and other restricted-range species such as the chocolate-backed kingfisher, white-thighed hornbill, and Puvel’s illadopsis.
Birding
Birding enthusiasts will find ample opportunities throughout Murchison Falls National Park, complementing wildlife viewing experiences. Highlights include spotting resident and water birds during the boat cruise to Murchison Falls, thrilling encounters with the majestic shoebill in the Nile Delta, and meticulous searches for rare forest species within Kaniyo Pabidi Forest.
Cultural Encounters
Immerse yourself in the vibrant cultural tapestry of Murchison Falls National Park with enriching encounters that go beyond wildlife and landscapes. Experience energetic traditional dances performed by the Mubako community around lodge campfires, creating a magical African ambiance as dusk descends. Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park
Uganda’s favorable climate and unique geographical location near the equator and Lake Victoria contribute to its reputation as a year-round travel destination. The country experiences two main rainy seasons: from October to November and the longer rainy period from mid-March to late May. These weather patterns influence the accessibility and wildlife sightings in national parks like Murchison Falls.
The optimal time to visit Murchison Falls National Park is during the dry seasons, which typically occur from December to late February and again from June to September. During these periods, the weather is generally dry, and animals tend to congregate around water bodies such as the Nile River, making them easier to spot during game drives and boat cruises. The clear skies and pleasant temperatures also enhance the overall safari experience, allowing visitors to enjoy unobstructed views of the park’s landscapes and wildlife.

Along this route, diversions include exploring the Kaniyo Pabidi section of Budongo Forest, experiencing the Heart of Murchison game viewing area, and witnessing the awe-inspiring Murchison Falls. Alternatively, a longer but scenic route from Masindi to Paraa via Bulia covers 136 km, passing through Budongo Forest before descending the rift valley escarpment, offering breathtaking views across Lake Albert towards the Blue Mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park can also be accessed through Bugungu or Mubako gates along this route.
Northern Entrance Gates
For access from the north side of the Nile, visitors can use the Chobe, Wankwar, and Tangi gates, all accessible from the Kampala-Pakwach road. This road crosses the Nile at Karuma Falls, located in the northeastern corner of the park, approximately 260 km from Kampala.
