Best Time of the Year to Visit Masai Mara National Reserve
The best time to visit Masai Mara varies with the wet and dry seasons. While the reserve can be visited year-round, the volume of wildlife sightings can differ. For the best game viewing, it is recommended to visit during the dry season or when the rain is minimal, which typically occurs from January to March, June to October, and December. The rainy seasons, marked by heavy rainfall, are usually in April, May, and November. However, due to global warming, these patterns can change, so it is always good to check current weather forecasts before planning your trip.
How to Get to Masai Mara National Reserve
Masai Mara National Reserve is located approximately 280 kilometers from Nairobi city. Here are the different transportation options available:
By Road
Traveling by road is the most common way to reach the Masai Mara. The journey takes about 4-5 hours from Nairobi, offering plenty of sightseeing opportunities along the way. The main roads are in good condition, but as you approach the Game Reserve, the roads turn to marram (gravel), providing what is often humorously called an “African Massage.” It is recommended to use a 4×4 vehicle for this trip, with rental costs ranging from $200 to $350 per day, excluding the driver’s allowance.
By Air
Air travel to Masai Mara is operated by several companies, with Safari Link being voted the best park aviation company in Kenya, though Air Kenya also provides excellent service. The flight duration is approximately 40-45 minutes. Be prepared for multiple stops as other passengers are dropped off at the six airstrips within the Masai Mara. Air transport fees vary depending on whether you choose a scheduled flight or charter a plane for your group.
