Attractions in Mount Kilimanjaro
The Peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro features eight distinct peaks, each offering unique scenery and challenges:
Kibo Peak
Kibo Peak is the most renowned and visually stunning of all the peaks, being snow-capped year-round despite its proximity to the Equator. Standing at 5,895 meters, it is the highest peak on the mountain, and reaching its summit is considered a monumental achievement, making Kilimanjaro the “roof of Africa.”
Mawenzi Peak
Mawenzi Peak, the second highest at 5,149 meters, is known for its rugged terrain and challenging climb, requiring specialized skills and equipment. Only experienced climbers with technical expertise and appropriate gear are permitted to attempt this ascent.
Shira Peak
Once the tallest peak on Mount Kilimanjaro, Shira Peak collapsed approximately 750 years ago. Now the third tallest peak at 3,962 meters, it offers a range of tourism activities. The collapse of Shira Peak created the Shira Plateau, known for its magnificent scenic views of Kilimanjaro. The open grassland of the plateau attracts various wildlife, including buffaloes, elephants, elands, and different types of monkeys, which use the area for feeding and salt licking. Additionally, the peak features notable points such as the Cathedral and Needle, which hikers can explore on day excursions.
Montane Forest
The montane forest zone surrounding Mount Kilimanjaro is a must-visit, even for those not aiming to climb the peaks. This lush forest, ranging from 1,800 to 2,800 meters in elevation, is home to diverse plant species, including the endemic Impatiens kilimanjari. The forest encircles the entire mountain and contributes to Kilimanjaro’s breathtaking beauty. Remarkably, 96% of the water in this region originates from this montane forest zone.
Kifinika Cultural Sites
Kifinika Cultural Sites hold historical significance as ritual grounds for the Maasai and Chagga people. Located along the Marangu route, these sites offer insights into the cultural rituals and historical life of these two tribes. Visitors can explore the rich heritage and traditions that were practiced in this area.
Lake Chala
Although Lake Chala is located outside the park, it is a must-visit destination during your Mount Kilimanjaro expedition. Just 30 minutes from Himo town, this lake draws its waters from underground streams fed by Kilimanjaro. A visit to Lake Chala can be planned either before or after your hike, providing a serene and picturesque addition to your adventure.
Waterfalls
Mount Kilimanjaro features two notable waterfalls that hikers can encounter during their treks:
- Marangu Waterfall: Located 1 km along the Marangu route, this waterfall offers a picturesque experience amidst the thick montane forest.
- Lauwo Waterfall: Situated 2.8 km along the Marangu route, this waterfall enhances the scenic beauty of the hike with its stunning natural surroundings.
Maundi Crater
Maundi Crater provides a bird’s-eye view of the scenic beauty of the lakes in the Mount Kilimanjaro region, including Lake Chala, Lake Jipe, and Nyumba ya Mungu. The crater is conveniently located just 15 minutes past Mandara Hut along the Marangu route, offering hikers a spectacular vantage point.
