A gorilla habituation permit is an official pass issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) that grants you the opportunity to visit the gorillas in their natural habitat. Unlike the regular trekking permit, which allows you to spend one hour with a gorilla family, the habituation permit offers an extended experience, giving you the chance to spend up to four hours with these incredible creatures.

Permits are only valid for the date booked, so be sure you’re available on the specified day. The permit includes a one-hour visit to a habituated mountain gorilla family, where you can take photos and videos, listen to informative talks from your guide, and enjoy the wilderness in the company of expert rangers. For your safety, a tourism police officer and a ranger guide (armed with a weapon for security) will accompany you throughout the trek.

If you’re looking to spend more time with the gorillas, the Gorilla Habituation Experience is a perfect choice. This experience allows you to interact with gorillas for up to four hours, a unique opportunity that you won’t get with the standard trekking permit.

Currently, two gorilla families in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are designated for the habituation process. There are also plans to expand the program to the northern part of the park, near Buhoma and Ruhija, to cater to visitors staying in these areas.

In addition to an unforgettable experience, you’ll receive a certificate confirming your visit to Bwindi and your contribution to gorilla conservation. A portion of the permit fee supports local communities by funding schools, hospitals, and job creation initiatives.
