When going on a gorilla trekking adventure, it’s crucial to follow the guidelines and regulations set to protect the mountain gorillas and ensure their safety. Gorillas are highly susceptible to human diseases, and even small disturbances can stress them. Since these creatures are wild and protective of their young, they need to be allowed to live undisturbed, eat, rest, and socialize in peace. To help you prepare for your gorilla trekking experience, here are the key guidelines and regulations.
1. Health First – No Illnesses Allowed
Rule: If you’re feeling unwell, you may be refused permission to visit the gorillas.
Why? Protecting the gorillas from any potential illnesses or infections is essential for their health.
2. Limited Visitors Per Day
Rule: Only one visit is allowed per day, with a maximum of eight tourists per group.
Why? Limiting the number of visitors helps reduce behavioral disturbances, stress, and the risk of infection to the gorillas.
3. Age Requirements
Rule: Visitors must be at least 15 years old.
Why? This helps minimize the risk of exposing gorillas to childhood diseases like measles, chickenpox, or flu.
4. One Hour with the Gorillas
Rule: You are allowed to spend up to one hour with the gorillas.
Why? The time limit helps minimize stress, behavioral disturbance, and the potential risk of disease transmission.
5. No Flash Photography
Rule: Flash photography is prohibited.
Why? Flash can startle or upset the gorillas, and it may provoke a defensive or aggressive reaction.
6. Keep Your Distance
Rule: Maintain at least seven meters (about 23 feet) of distance from the gorillas. If they approach to within two or three meters (which curious juveniles may do), slowly retreat to five meters.
Why? This ensures a safe distance to minimize stress, prevent the spread of disease, and protect visitors from potential aggressive behavior.
7. Stay Together as a Group
Rule: Always stay in a tight group. Avoid spreading out or surrounding the gorillas.
Why? This allows the gorillas to feel safe and move freely, reducing the risk of a threat response.
8. Be Mindful of Your Body Language
Rule: Do not raise your arms, point, or make direct eye contact with the gorillas.
Why? Gorillas may perceive these actions as threats, which can provoke aggression.
9. Do Not Clear Vegetation for Better Views
Rule: Do not disturb vegetation around the gorillas to get a better view.
Why? Clearing vegetation can disturb or frighten the gorillas. Guides will handle any necessary adjustments.
10. If a Silverback Charges, Stay Calm
Rule: If a silverback gorilla beats its chest, displays aggression, or charges, do not run.
Why? Though it may be intimidating, it’s safest to remain calm and still. Running may provoke the gorilla further.
11. Eating, Drinking, and Smoking Restrictions
Rule: No eating, drinking, or smoking near the gorillas, or within 200 meters of them.
Why? Food may attract gorillas, and human food or remains can carry infections.
12. Keep Noise to a Minimum
Rule: Speak in whispers, and avoid loud noises. If bitten by safari ants or stung by nettles, do not scream.
Why? Loud noises may scare the gorillas and disturb the group, especially those who are newly habituated.
13. Sneezing or Coughing? Be Cautious
Rule: If you need to sneeze or cough, turn away from the gorillas and cover your nose and mouth.
Why? To minimize the spread of any airborne illnesses you may unknowingly carry.
14. Dispose of Waste Properly
Rule: All fecal matter should be buried, and rubbish should be carried out of the park.
Why? Feces can carry harmful pathogens, and litter can attract animals or cause harm if ingested.
