Are you planning an adventure from the Cyanika Border to the Rushaga region of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park? If you’re looking for a memorable short gorilla tour that starts in Kigali, booking a gorilla trek in Bwindi from Cyanika Border is your best choice. At Trek Africa Expeditions, we’re here to help you plan the perfect safari, tailored to your preferences and interests in Rushaga.
Cyanika Border is located in Kisoro District, Southwestern Uganda, approximately a 2-hour drive (about 45 km) via the Kisoro-Cyanika Road to Rushaga. As one of the three main border crossings between Rwanda and Uganda, Cyanika is easily accessible. The road from Kisoro is well-paved, but expect some rough stretches as you approach the park. Our comfortable 4×4 vehicles ensure a smooth journey, and we can pick you up right at the border or anywhere in Chanika.
Rushaga is one of the primary sectors for gorilla trekking in Uganda, located in the southwestern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which shares a border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, making it an incredible destination for gorilla enthusiasts. With its ancient forests, rich biodiversity, and stunning landscapes, Bwindi is a must-visit for any nature lover.
Gorilla trekking is the highlight of any visit to Rushaga. The trek begins early at 7:00 am with a briefing at the Rushaga Park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the guidelines for trekking and interacting with the gorillas. After the briefing, experienced park guides, rangers, and trackers will lead you into the forest to locate the gorillas.
You’ll have one hour to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat once they are found. Please note that only eight visitors are allowed per habituated gorilla family each day, in accordance with Uganda Wildlife Authority policies aimed at conserving these amazing animals. To participate in gorilla trekking, you must be at least 15 years old.
In the Rushaga sector, you can trek various gorilla families, including the Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Bikyingi, Kahungye, Busingye, and Mucunguzi families. Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 800 for non-foreign residents, USD 700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens. There are 56 permits available daily, so early booking is recommended.
For a deeper experience, consider the Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows you to spend up to four hours with mountain gorillas that are still in the habituation process. This exclusive activity is limited to just four participants, making advance booking essential. The experience typically takes half a day or longer, depending on the time taken to locate the gorillas.
During this immersive experience, you will work alongside researchers and guides to observe how the gorillas interact, feed, and move within their natural environment. Since these gorillas are still getting used to human presence, the experience is both thrilling and educational.

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the Batwa people with our 5-day cultural encounter in the Rushaga region. Historically, the Batwa, often referred to as pygmies, lived in Bwindi Forest until their relocation to nearby communities to support mountain gorilla conservation and tourism.
During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the Batwa’s traditional forest lifestyle, including their techniques for harvesting wild honey and hunting. Experience their vibrant dances and hear their stories about adapting to life outside the forest. Additionally, you can visit community groups where local women create crafts and prepare food. We encourage any donations you might have to support local children with clothes and school supplies.
Bwindi Forest National Park is one of the oldest tropical forests in the world, with some areas dating back over 250,000 years. Its dense canopy and ancient tree species make for exceptional nature walks. While trekking through Rushaga, you’ll learn about the various tree species, spot an array of bird species, and, if you’re lucky, catch a glimpse of forest elephants, monkeys, and baboons.
Nature walks also lead to scenic river streams that flow through the Rushaga region. For the more adventurous, there’s a fascinating walk from Kisoro near the Cyanika Border to Rushaga, though it requires a good level of physical fitness.
