The road leading to Mgahinga is well-tarmacked, but you will transition to a rougher terrain closer to the park. On the day of your trek, you’ll begin with a briefing at the park headquarters, where experienced guides and park rangers will share important regulations and tips. After your encounter, you’ll return to receive a certificate commemorating your successful gorilla trek.

Golden monkey trekking permits are priced at USD 100. The trek begins early in the morning at 7:00 AM with a briefing at the park headquarters, where you’ll learn about the guidelines for your forest adventure. Accompanied by knowledgeable park guides and rangers, you’ll venture into the lush forest in search of these playful monkeys, allowing for one hour of observation once you find them. Golden monkeys are only found in Mgahinga National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, making this a special opportunity.
For adventure enthusiasts, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers exciting opportunities for volcano climbing and hiking in the stunning Gahinga Ranges. The park is home to three of the six Virunga Mountains: Mountain Sabyinyo, Mountain Gahinga, and Mountain Muhabura. On clear days, the panoramic views from the summit are breathtaking, encompassing the Virunga Volcanoes, Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the majestic peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains.
