Are you ready for an unforgettable adventure? Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, accessible from the Cyanika Border, offers a unique opportunity to connect with these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Located approximately 121 kilometers northwest of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, Cyanika Border sits in the Cyanika Sector of Burera District. This border crossing connects Rwanda with Uganda, making it one of three key routes between the two countries.
Once you cross into Rwanda at Cyanika, it’s just a short drive—less than an hour—to Volcanoes National Park. The roads are mostly well-paved, and we use comfortable 4×4 vehicles for our all-inclusive packages to ensure a smooth journey. Before entering the park, you’ll need to secure permits for your chosen activities or pay the park entrance fees.
Volcanoes National Park, or Parc des Volcans, is situated in the Musanze region of northwestern Rwanda. It’s one of the oldest national parks in Africa and a vital part of the Virunga Conservation Area, home to several extinct volcanoes, including Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi, and Mount Bisoke. This breathtaking park is renowned for its endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, as well as a rich diversity of birds, primates, and unique flora.
Managed by the Rwanda Development Board, the park plays a crucial role in conservation efforts aimed at protecting its iconic inhabitants from threats like poaching. The collaboration between Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo enhances the protection of these vulnerable species, allowing them to thrive across borders.
For a truly unforgettable experience, plan to spend at least one night in Volcanoes National Park for gorilla trekking. This popular activity allows you to observe habituated mountain gorillas in their natural environment, witnessing their behaviors as they feed, play, and rest. With ten gorilla families available for trekking, each group is limited to just eight visitors per day, ensuring an intimate experience.
Gorilla trekking starts daily at 7:00 AM from Kinigi, following a briefing on park guidelines. Despite sharing 99% of our DNA with these incredible creatures, it’s important to remember that they are still wild animals, and guidelines must be followed for your safety and theirs. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements.
To participate in gorilla trekking, you’ll need a Rwanda gorilla permit, which costs USD 1,500. This permit grants you one hour of viewing time with the gorillas, allowing for photography and unforgettable memories. Trek Africa Expeditions can assist you in securing your permit and customizing your trek for an affordable and memorable experience.
In addition to gorilla trekking, don’t miss the chance to experience the charming golden monkeys of Volcanoes National Park. This activity allows you to visit two habituated communities of these rare monkeys, each with around 80 members. Unlike gorilla trekking, there is no limit on the number of visitors for golden monkey tracking, making it a fantastic option for those seeking an engaging wildlife experience.
The golden monkey trekking permit costs USD 100 and can be obtained from the Rwanda Development Board. The activity also begins at the park headquarters at 7:00 AM, where park wardens will brief you on the guidelines. Expect to walk for 30 minutes to a few hours in search of these lively primates, and once located, you’ll have one hour to observe and enjoy their playful antics.
One of the most cherished experiences in Volcanoes National Park is the hike to Dian Fossey’s Tomb. This memorable trek begins at the Karisoke Research Camp and takes about an hour to reach the tomb of the renowned primatologist. Dian Fossey dedicated her life to protecting endangered mountain gorillas, raising awareness about their plight, and conducting groundbreaking research. Tragically, she was murdered by alleged poachers and is now laid to rest in this beautiful park, where a memorial honors her legacy. Her work, highlighted in the film Gorillas in the Mist, continues to inspire conservation efforts today.
The hike itself covers approximately 2,500 to 3,000 meters and leads you through stunning landscapes to Fossey’s final resting place. Along the way, you’ll reflect on her passion for the mountain gorillas and the significant impact of her conservation efforts.
Exploring the vibrant culture of Rwanda is another enriching aspect of your visit to Volcanoes National Park. The Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, located in Nyabigoma, Kinigi, offers a unique opportunity to engage with local communities. Originally, the locals lived in the forest and were involved in poaching; however, they were relocated and transformed into a community focused on conservation and culture.
At Iby’Iwacu, you can immerse yourself in the heritage of the Rwandan people. Participate in traditional activities, witness captivating dances, and learn about their daily lives and customs. This cultural experience adds depth to your journey, showcasing the rich traditions and history of the region.
