Nyungwe Forest National Park, located in southwestern Rwanda, is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, renowned for its rich biodiversity and stunning natural beauty. Nestled on the border with Burundi and adjacent to Kibira National Park to the south, as well as Lake Kivu and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Nyungwe is celebrated as the best-preserved montane rainforest in Central Africa. Spanning approximately 970 square kilometers, the park is home to over 1,050 plant species, including 250 endemic to the Albertine Rift, and features diverse wildlife, such as 85 mammal species, 38 reptiles, and at least 120 butterfly species.
Established in 2004, Nyungwe National Park’s management was entrusted to African Parks in 2020, marking a new chapter in its conservation journey. The park is particularly famous for its primates, including large troops of black-and-white Colobus monkeys and chimpanzees, which draw visitors from around the globe.
Experience the thrill of chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, where you’ll have the opportunity to observe these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat. This unforgettable experience begins in the morning, with groups of up to eight trekkers led by knowledgeable guides. The park is home to approximately 400 chimpanzees, with two habituated communities ready to welcome visitors. As you trek through the ancient forest, you’ll witness chimps playing, feeding, and moving through the trees.
A chimpanzee trekking permit costs $100 per person and includes park entrance fees, a ranger, and a guide. Given the popularity of this experience, it’s advisable to book your permit in advance through the Rwanda Development Board, as they can sell out quickly.

The walk, which takes about three hours, starts from the Uwinka Reception Centre. As you stroll along the 200-meter-long trail, you’ll be surrounded by butterflies, colorful birds, and perhaps even some of the park’s 13 primate species. This unique vantage point provides a bird’s-eye view of the park’s diverse flora and fauna.
Nyungwe Forest features a variety of hiking trails catering to different skill levels and interests. Trails such as the Gishigishigi Trail, Karamba Trail, and Umugote Trail allow you to immerse yourself in the park’s breathtaking landscapes, observe unique plants and wildlife, and enjoy a chance encounter with primates. Hiking durations range from one hour to full-day excursions, depending on your chosen route.
