When it comes to chimpanzee trekking, Kibale National Park and Kalinzu Forest are two of Uganda’s premier destinations, each offering unique experiences for wildlife enthusiasts. Kibale National Park is renowned for its rich diversity of primates, boasting 13 species, including the largest population of chimpanzees in Uganda, estimated at over 1,500. Alongside these fascinating apes, you can also encounter nocturnal bushbabies, potto, monkeys, and baboons. Bird watchers will delight in the park’s avian diversity, with over 335 bird species recorded.
In contrast, Kalinzu Forest, located in southwestern Uganda near Maramagambo Forest and Queen Elizabeth National Park, is home to six primate species, including chimpanzees, baboons, blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest monkeys, Vervet monkeys, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
The cost of chimpanzee permits varies significantly between these two locations. In Kalinzu Forest, a chimpanzee permit is priced at just $50, making it a budget-friendly option compared to Kibale National Park, where permits cost $200. While permits for Kalinzu can be obtained at the reserve’s reception center or through a tour operator, it’s advisable to book in advance to secure your spot, especially during peak seasons. For Kibale, permits can be reserved through the Uganda Wildlife Authority or directly at the park headquarters.
Both Kibale National Park and Kalinzu Forest offer treks that begin early in the morning. After a briefing on the park’s rules and regulations at the forest headquarters, you’ll be grouped with other trekkers and assigned a park guide or ranger. The trek typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours, depending on the movement of the chimpanzees. Once located, you can spend one hour observing these incredible creatures as they eat, rest, and play. With a 95% success rate for sightings, you’ll also have opportunities to see other primates, reptiles, and various mammals along the way.
The best months for chimpanzee trekking in both Kibale National Park and Kalinzu Forest are from June to October and December to March. During these dry seasons, the weather is mild, making the trekking experience more enjoyable. The vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the chimps, which makes for excellent photo opportunities. Conversely, the wet months of April, May, and November can lead to thicker vegetation, making sightings more challenging. However, during this period, treks may be shorter since chimpanzees tend to stay closer to food sources.
Both Kibale National Park and Kalinzu Forest offer well-organized trekking experiences with a 99% chance of spotting chimpanzees year-round. Whether you choose Kibale’s expansive primate population or Kalinzu’s more budget-friendly option, each trek promises an unforgettable encounter with Uganda’s incredible wildlife.
When it comes to chimpanzee trekking in Uganda, Kibale National Park stands out with a greater number of chimpanzee families available for trekking compared to Kalinzu Forest. However, both locations offer incredible experiences, with nearly identical chances of spotting these magnificent creatures in their natural habitats—about 95% in both parks. So whether you choose Kibale or Kalinzu, you’re likely to see chimpanzees during your trek.
One of the highlights of chimpanzee trekking in Kibale is the opportunity to participate in a chimpanzee habituation experience. This unique program allows you to spend more time with semi-habituated chimpanzees under the guidance of expert trackers and researchers. The habituation permit costs $300 for non-foreign residents, $250 for foreign residents, and just UGX 250000 for Ugandan citizens, offering an extended encounter beyond the standard one-hour trek.
Both Kibale National Park and Kalinzu Forest offer a variety of accommodation options, from budget-friendly lodges to mid-range and luxury stays. Kibale National Park has more lodges within the park, while Kalinzu has budget accommodations and camping grounds nearby, particularly close to Queen Elizabeth National Park.
