When it comes to chimp trekking in Uganda, Kibale Forest National Park and Kyambura Gorge offer two distinct experiences, both rich in biodiversity and unforgettable encounters with our primate cousins. Kibale is renowned for its impressive population of over 1,500 chimpanzees, making it one of the top spots for chimp trekking in the country. In addition to chimpanzees, Kibale is home to 13 other primate species, including the nocturnal bushbaby, potto, various monkeys, and baboons. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, boasting over 335 bird species.
Chimpanzee trekking is the main draw in both Kibale and Kyambura, with each location managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. To trek chimpanzees in either forest, you’ll need a chimpanzee trekking permit. At Trek Africa Expeditions, we can assist you in securing these permits and provide comprehensive information about trekking, travel in Uganda, and alternative activities in both Kibale and Kyambura.
Kyambura Gorge is located within Queen Elizabeth National Park and offers a different chimp trekking experience. Trekking in Kyambura can be arranged for both the morning and afternoon, and we can customize your itinerary based on your preferences. The permit for chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura costs $100 per person, significantly lower than Kibale’s permit fee of $250.
Both parks offer one-hour viewing sessions once you locate the chimpanzees, which are accustomed to human presence. Each trek begins with a briefing at the forest headquarters, where you’ll be grouped with a park guide. Expect the trek to last between 3 to 4 hours, depending on the chimps’ movement. Along the way, you may spot other primates, reptiles, and mammals. The chances of encountering chimpanzees are approximately 95% in both locations.
The optimal months for chimp trekking in Kibale and Kyambura are from June to October and December to March. These months fall within Uganda’s dry season, offering mild rainfall and clearer visibility as vegetation is less dense. However, trekking is possible year-round, with the wet season (April, May, and November) providing shorter treks since chimpanzees typically don’t wander far from food sources during this time.
