Stretching 120 kilometers in length and 60 kilometers in width, the Rwenzori range is as vast as it is stunning.

Historically, the Rwenzori Mountains were referred to as the “Mountains of the Moon” by Greek explorers in search of the Nile’s source. According to a merchant named Diogenes, these mountains were said to be the source of the Nile and were described as being snow-capped. Sadly, the snow on the peaks has been shrinking over time, with some predicting that it may disappear entirely. Despite this, the Rwenzori Mountains remain one of Uganda’s three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making them an even more significant attraction.

Hiking to the Highest Peak: Margherita Peak

The highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains is Margherita Peak, standing tall at 5,109 meters above sea level. Reaching this summit typically takes between 7 to 10 days, depending on the chosen route and pace. As you hike, you’ll pass several notable peaks, including Savoia, Great Tooth, and Elena Peak, with Mountain Stanley’s majestic presence to your left. Along the way, you’ll also encounter Mt. Speke and Mt. Baker, visible from Weismann’s Peak.

Cost of Hiking Rwenzori Mountains

The cost of your Rwenzori Mountain trek will depend on the length of your trip and your budget. This trek costs $1,640 for 1 or 2 persons, and $1,520 for groups of 3 or more. The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) entrance fee of $35 per day is an additional cost, paid separately in cash. The package includes porters, meals, and accommodation during the hike.

Best Time to Hike the Rwenzori Mountains

Although the Rwenzori Mountains can be visited year-round, the best time to hike is during the dry season, which occurs between December, January, February, June, July, August, and September. During these months, the trails are drier, making for easier trekking, and the vegetation is less dense, providing clearer views of the surrounding wildlife and scenery. The wet months—March, April, May, October, and November—tend to bring heavier rainfall, making the trails slippery and the conditions more challenging. If you’re planning to combine your trek with other activities, the dry months are typically the most comfortable.
