Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

If you’re considering a gorilla trekking adventure in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, it’s important to know the age requirements for participants. The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years. Visitors’ passports will be checked at the park headquarters, so if you’re planning to trek with your son or daughter, ensure they meet this age limit.

While there is no maximum age limit for adults who are physically fit to trek, we encourage families with minors to provide us with copies of their passports before booking and securing gorilla permits. If your child is underage, they can still join you on the trip! While you’re trekking, we can arrange various activities to keep them entertained, such as nature walks around the lodge, games or visits to local communities.

What Is Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park Like?

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a year-round experience, offering daily opportunities to observe the majestic mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. This unforgettable activity allows you to witness the behaviors of these endangered creatures as they feed, move and interact in the wild. The park is home to ten habituated gorilla families and only eight visitors are permitted to trek with each family each day.

The likelihood of encountering mountain gorillas is incredibly high—around 99%—thanks to the guidance of experienced trackers, guides and park rangers. Treks begin daily in Kinigi at 7:00 AM, following a briefing that outlines essential guidelines for trekking. Although gorillas share 99% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals, so it’s crucial to adhere to the do’s and don’ts provided by your guides. The trek duration can vary from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the gorillas’ location in the forest.

About Volcanoes National Park

Volcanoes National Park, known as Parc des Volcans in French and Pariki Yigihugu y’ibirunga in Kinyarwanda, is located in the northeastern region of Rwanda, near the town of Musanze. As one of the oldest national parks in Africa, it is a key destination for wildlife enthusiasts, particularly for those looking to see mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including various bird species, monkeys and forest hogs, along with rich vegetation and unique cultural experiences.

The park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi, and Bisoke. Approximately half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population resides in this region. The park is managed by the Rwanda Development Board, which oversees all tourism activities in Rwanda and works to protect the mountain gorillas from threats like poaching.

Volcanoes National Park shares borders with Uganda’s Mgahinga National Park and DR Congo’s Virunga National Park, fostering collaborative conservation efforts among the three countries to safeguard these endangered primates.
