Best Places to See Gorillas in Africa: Your Ultimate Guide

Planning a gorilla trekking safari in Africa? Looking for the best destinations to encounter gorillas in the wild? Gorilla trekking is a bucket-list experience, offering a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Though it involves high costs, physical effort and careful planning, the reward of seeing gorillas up close in Uganda, Rwanda or Congo is unmatched. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best places to see gorillas in Africa.

What Is Gorilla Trekking? Understanding the Adventure

Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense forests, crossing rivers and navigating steep terrain in search of mountain gorillas. Once you locate a gorilla family, you get to spend one magical hour observing their behavior. For those seeking a more immersive experience, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience, where you can spend four hours with gorillas alongside researchers and trackers.

Top Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

The remaining mountain gorillas live in three countries—Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)—spread across four national parks. These are the top destinations:

1. Uganda

• Bwindi Impenetrable National Park: Home to 20 habituated gorilla families, Bwindi offers the largest gorilla population in Africa. It also hosts the exclusive Gorilla Habituation Experience.
• Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: Though smaller, Mgahinga is part of the Virunga Mountain Range and offers a quieter, more intimate trekking experience.

2. Rwanda

• Volcanoes National Park: Renowned for its well-organized trekking system and luxurious lodges, Volcanoes National Park is perfect for travelers seeking a high-end experience.

3. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

• Virunga National Park: Known for its adventurous vibe, this park offers gorilla trekking at a more affordable rate.
• Kahuzi-Biéga National Park: This park provides the unique opportunity to see eastern lowland gorillas, a species distinct from mountain gorillas.

Tips for Booking Gorilla Permits

1. Book Early: Gorilla permits are limited and sell out quickly, especially during the peak season (June–September). Book at least 5 months in advance.
2. Choose a Reliable Operator: Book your permit directly through wildlife authorities like the Uganda Wildlife Authority or Rwanda Development Board or work with a trusted tour operator like Trek Africa Gorillas.
3. Budget Carefully: Permit prices do not include accommodation, transportation, meals or other safari expenses. Work with your tour operator to get an all-inclusive package.

Comparing Gorilla Trekking Destinations in Africa

Uganda

• Why Visit: Uganda is considered one of the best destinations for gorilla trekking. It is safe, affordable and offers the unique Gorilla Habituation Experience.
• Number of Gorillas: Uganda boasts 17 habituated gorilla groups, making it ideal for travelers who prioritize availability and affordability.

Rwanda

• Why Visit: Rwanda provides a premium trekking experience, with shorter travel times to the trekking parks and high-end accommodation.
• Cost: The most expensive but also the most luxurious option.

DR Congo

• Why Visit: DRC offers a raw, adventurous trekking experience at a lower cost. It is the only destination where you can see both mountain and lowland gorillas.
• Safety Note: The DRC is suitable for more intrepid travelers due to its political and security challenges.

Age Limits and Accessibility for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Africa is 15 years, while the maximum age depends on individual fitness levels, typically up to 85 years. However, elder travelers who may not be physically fit to trek can still enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience, particularly in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, thanks to the availability of sedan chair carriers.

These chairs allow less mobile visitors to be carried by porters to and from the gorillas, ensuring they don’t miss out. You can hire a sedan chair in advance or on the day of the trek. The cost typically ranges between $400–$500, depending on the distance and duration of your trek.

Gorilla Permit Cancellation Policies Across Africa

A gorilla trekking permit is a mandatory requirement for all trekkers and it’s important to plan carefully to avoid losing money. Cancellation penalties are generally the same across Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo:

• 0–8 days before the trek: No refund is given for canceled permits.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Africa: When to Go

Gorilla trekking is available year-round but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:

• January–February
• June–September

During these months, the trails are less muddy and the thinner vegetation makes it easier to spot the gorillas. The dry season also makes traveling to the parks more convenient and enjoyable.

Packing appropriately is essential for a successful and comfortable gorilla trekking experience. Here’s what you’ll need:

• Clothing:
  • Comfortable, durable hiking boots
