Why Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest Is Worth It

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is more than just an activity; it’s an enriching experience that allows you to connect with these remarkable creatures. The trek typically lasts between 3 to 4 hours and can be tailored to a half-day or full-day adventure, depending on the chimps’ movements. Once you find them, you’ll spend one hour in their company, observing their behaviors—eating, resting and playing. This intimate experience is truly worth every penny.

The Impact of Your Contribution to Conservation

The cost of chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is $130 for non-foreign residents, $120 for foreign residents and $85 for Ugandan citizens. This fee not only grants you access to this unique experience but also plays a significant role in conservation efforts. The funds collected support the ongoing preservation of the chimpanzees and their habitat.

Without the revenue generated from trekking permits, the forest would likely face severe encroachment from surrounding communities. Your participation in this activity contributes to foreign exchange earnings, which help protect the forest’s ecosystem. The Uganda National Forestry Authority and Uganda Wildlife Authority are committed to conserving this vital habitat and your fees enable them to continue their efforts.

Moreover, 20% of the revenue from the trekking permits and park entrance fees goes directly to the local communities surrounding Budongo Forest. This financial support fosters local conservation efforts and encourages communities to safeguard the chimpanzees. The funds are used to build infrastructure, such as schools and hospitals and to promote agricultural initiatives, improving the quality of life for residents.

Chimpanzee Trekking Costs and Daily Sessions

Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is overseen by licensed Uganda lodges in collaboration with the National Forestry Authority and Uganda Wildlife Authority. A trekking permit is essential for those wishing to observe the chimpanzees, who have been habituated to human presence. The permit allows for one hour of viewing once the chimps are located.

There are two trekking sessions available each day: the morning session, which starts at 8:00 AM and the afternoon session, beginning at midday. Both sessions are conducted safely, ensuring a rewarding experience for all participants.

Best Time for Chimpanzee Trekking in Budongo Forest

The best time to embark on a chimpanzee trek in Budongo Forest is between June and October and again from December to March. During these months, Uganda experiences its dry season, characterized by mild rainfall that makes trekking conditions optimal. The vegetation is less dense, allowing for easier visibility of the chimpanzees and providing excellent opportunities for stunning photographs.

In contrast, the wet season, which spans April, May and November, brings taller vegetation that can obstruct views of the chimps.
