If you’re planning a trip to Uganda for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, we’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions to help you prepare for an unforgettable experience.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of the world’s few remaining homes for the endangered mountain gorillas. Besides Bwindi, you can also find these magnificent creatures in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and Virunga National Park (DR Congo). Bwindi is a rich, biodiverse forest, one of Africa’s oldest, hosting over 350 bird species, 120 mammal species, and numerous primates, including chimpanzees and L’Hoest’s monkeys. But the stars of Bwindi are the mountain gorillas, with over 15 habituated gorilla families available for trekking.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four sectors for gorilla trekking: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, and Rushaga.
Each sector has different gorilla families, with Rushaga boasting the highest number of habituated groups.
A gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi costs:
This permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas once you find them.
Gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). You can purchase them at UWA’s headquarters in Kampala or Kisoro. Tourists arriving via Entebbe are advised to purchase their permits from Kampala, while those traveling through Kigali, Rwanda, can buy theirs in Kisoro, which is only a 1-2 hour drive to Bwindi.
Trek Africa Expeditions can help you secure your permits in advance or on short notice. Simply confirm your trekking dates with us, and we’ll tentatively reserve your permits online. Once payment is made, we will purchase your permits and send you scanned copies as confirmation.
Gorilla habituation in Bwindi is an immersive experience available in the Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors in the south. Instead of spending one hour with the gorillas like during normal trekking, the gorilla habituation experience allows you to spend up to four hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family. During this time, you’ll participate in activities that help these gorillas become accustomed to human presence.
Because only four permits are issued daily for this experience, it’s recommended to book 2-3 months in advance. A gorilla habituation permit costs USD 1500 for non-residents, USD 1000 for foreign residents, and USD 220 for East African citizens.
The main difference between the two experiences lies in the duration and group size:
Both experiences start in the morning and can be physically challenging as you hike through the dense forest.
The best time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi is during the dry seasons, from January to February and June to early September. The dry months offer easier travel conditions and better visibility, as the vegetation is less dense.
When preparing for gorilla trekking in Bwindi Forest, it’s essential to have the right gear to ensure a comfortable and safe experience. The terrain can be muddy, especially during the rainy season, and you’ll need durable, comfortable footwear for the hike. Here’s a guide on what to pack for your gorilla trek:
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi can vary in difficulty depending on the movement of the gorillas and weather conditions. The terrain is often steep, and there are no marked paths, so be prepared for a challenging hike. Treks can last from a couple of hours to a full day, with some hikes extending up to 8 hours or more, often through thick vegetation and high-altitude areas. It’s essential to be in good physical condition and mentally prepared for a strenuous hike.
Bwindi Forest National Park has several accommodation options depending on which sector you’ll be trekking in:
Each lodge is strategically located close to the starting points of gorilla trekking, ensuring convenience for early morning departures.
Bwindi has four sectors for gorilla trekking: Rushaga, Nkuringo, Buhoma, and Ruhija. The Rushaga sector is often preferred by tour operators and visitors because it has the highest number of habituated gorilla families, making it easier to secure a permit. Buhoma is known for being less strenuous, with some treks lasting only 3-4 hours, and offers a good chance of early finishes. On the other hand, the Nkuringo sector is more challenging due to its higher elevation, but it offers rewarding views and experiences. Regardless of the sector you choose, the chances of seeing gorillas are almost guaranteed, with a 99% success rate.
Bwindi can be accessed by both road and air, depending on the sector you’re visiting:
