Gishwati Mukura National Park, Rwanda’s newest national park, was established in 2015 by merging the Gishwati and Mukura forests. Covering just 34 square kilometers, it is Rwanda’s smallest and least visited park, but its unique location on the ridge separating the Congo and Nile water catchment areas along the Albertine Rift makes it a remarkable natural treasure.
The park is home to a variety of wildlife, including the endangered Eastern Chimpanzees, golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and Blue monkeys. It also boasts over 232 bird species, many of which are endemic to the Albertine Rift, making it an exceptional spot for birdwatching. Despite its challenges—such as past threats from illegal farming and mining—the park has experienced a remarkable recovery since being gazetted, and its ecosystems are steadily being restored.
The park is teeming with primates such as chimpanzees, golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, vervet monkeys, olive baboons, and black-and-white colobus monkeys. You can also spot other mammals, including duikers, during your explorations.
A birdwatcher’s paradise, Gishwati Mukura is home to over 232 bird species, including rare and endemic birds like the Martial Eagle, Grey Crowned Crane, and the regal Sunbird. This makes it one of the best birding destinations in Rwanda.
Gishwati Mukura National Park is approximately a 2-hour drive from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. For those seeking a more scenic route, chartered flights are available. You can also combine your visit with a trip to Uganda, as the park is accessible from Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, making it a perfect addition to a Rwanda-Uganda safari.
While the park is new and accommodation options are limited, the Gishwati Lodge is a luxury lodge operated by Wilderness Safaris and offers the best stay in the park. With only six chalets, it provides an intimate and comfortable experience for guests. To ensure availability, it’s recommended to book your accommodation at least a month in advance.
Alternatively, you can stay in nearby locations like Kivu or Volcanoes National Park, which are only 30 minutes from Gishwati Mukura.
