Gorilla Permits 2025–2026: Everything You Need to Know

Planning a gorilla trekking adventure in 2025 or 2026? Gorilla permits are essential documents that grant you access to gorilla national parks and allow you to encounter these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Each permit comes with a unique identification number, authorizing your visit to a specific national park.

• In Uganda, permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
• In Rwanda, they are managed by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB).
• In Congo, the permits are handled by Virunga National Park authorities.

Gorilla Permits in Uganda

Uganda offers over 150 gorilla permits daily, thanks to more than 20 gorilla families available for trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Each gorilla family accommodates up to 8 visitors per day.

Here’s how the gorilla families are distributed across the regions of Bwindi:

• Buhoma Region: 4 gorilla families
• Ruhija Region: 4 gorilla families
• Rushaga Region: 8 gorilla families (the highest number)
• Nkuringo Region: 3 gorilla families

How to Book Gorilla Permits for 2025–2026

To secure a gorilla trekking experience, it’s essential to book your permit in advance. Here’s how you can do it:

1. Contact Trek Africa Gorillas Ltd: Send an email to info@trekafricagorillas.com with your preferred travel dates.
2. Permit Availability Check: We’ll check permit availability with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
3. Confirmation and Payment: Once permits are available, we’ll send you an invoice. After payment, we’ll purchase your permits and share scanned copies for your records.

Booking your gorilla permits at least 2-3 months in advance is recommended, especially during the peak season when permits sell out quickly.

Where to Trek Gorillas in Africa

Gorilla trekking is possible in three countries that host the only remaining mountain gorillas:

1. Uganda:
   • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
   • Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
2. Rwanda:
   • Volcanoes National Park
3. Congo:
   • Virunga National Park (Mountain Gorillas)
   • Kahuzi-Biega National Park (Lowland Gorillas)

Due to high demand, especially during the peak season (June–September), it’s advisable to book your permits at least 5 months in advance.

Cost of Gorilla Permits in Uganda

The cost of gorilla permits in Uganda (2025–2026) is as follows:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 per person per trek
• Foreign Residents: $700 per person
• East African Citizens: $80 per person

Each permit includes a one-hour encounter with a gorilla family.

For a more immersive experience, Uganda offers a Gorilla Habituation Experience, which allows you to spend up to 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas in Bwindi. This unique experience costs $1,500 per person and involves accompanying researchers and trackers.

Age Limit for Gorilla Trekking

The minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15 years, and the maximum age is 85 years, depending on individual fitness levels.

For elderly or less physically fit visitors, sedan chairs are available in Bwindi. Porters use these chairs to carry trekkers to and from the forest. The cost of hiring a sedan chair ranges from $400 to $500, and it can be arranged in advance or on the day of the trek.

Best Time for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Uganda is available year-round, but the best time to visit is during the dry seasons:

• January to February
• June to early September

During these months, the trails are less muddy, and the vegetation is less dense, offering better visibility of the gorillas.

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

• Comfortable Walking/Hiking Boots & Socks: Choose durable, waterproof boots that provide good ankle support, as the trails can be muddy and uneven.

How to Get to Bwindi Forest National Park

There are two main ways to reach Bwindi Impenetrable National Park:

• By Road:
  If you’re traveling from Entebbe or Kampala, the drive takes approximately 8-9 hours. The route follows the main safari circuit, and you’ll turn off at Muko along the Kabale-Kisoro road. From there, follow the signs to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) entrance and your booked accommodation in either the Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors.
• By Air:
  You can fly from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi airfield to Kisoro airstrip. From Kisoro, a transfer to the park is necessary. Scheduled flights are available with domestic airlines like Aero Link and Fly Uganda, and you should plan your airstrip transfer with your tour operator.
