Are you dreaming of seeing gorillas in the wild? Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Concerned about your safety in the jungle? Don’t worry! Bwindi is a safe and well-managed destination for gorilla trekking, ensuring a secure and unforgettable experience.
Why Choose Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking?
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the top places in the world to see mountain gorillas, housing more than half of the world’s remaining population. Located in southwestern Uganda, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the park offers an exceptional chance to observe these endangered creatures in the wild. As one of the oldest forests in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bwindi is not only rich in wildlife but also offers an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience.
The park is divided into four sectors for trekking: Rushaga, Buhoma, Ruhija, and Nkuringo. Regardless of the sector, your gorilla trek will be equally rewarding. The chances of seeing gorillas are extremely high — around 98% — thanks to the park’s impressive population of 18 habituated gorilla families, all of which are available for trekking.
What is Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi?
Gorilla trekking involves visiting the gorillas in their natural forest habitat. Your day starts early, with a briefing at one of the park headquarters. You’ll learn the dos and don’ts of trekking, such as how to behave around the gorillas and how to move through the forest. Afterward, guides, rangers, and trackers will take you on a journey through the dense forest to find the gorillas. Once you locate a family, you’ll spend up to one hour observing and photographing them.
Remember, each gorilla family can accommodate only 8 visitors per day to ensure minimal disturbance and effective conservation efforts. To trek, you must be 15 years or older — this age restriction is in place to protect both the gorillas and the trekkers.
The Gorilla Families of Bwindi

- Rushaga Sector: Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Bikyingi, Kahungye, Busingye, Mucunguzi

These families are all well-habituated to human presence, allowing for a safe and immersive experience while trekking.

What is the Best Time for Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park?
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a tropical rainforest, meaning it experiences rainfall year-round. However, the best time to visit for gorilla trekking is during the drier months of January, February, June, July, August, and early September. During these months, rainfall is less frequent, making trekking a bit easier and more comfortable. That said, the climate in Bwindi can change unexpectedly, so it’s wise to be prepared for rain at any time.
Interestingly, some travelers prefer visiting during the rainy season, as the lush vegetation makes it easier for the gorillas to find food, and the animals are often easier to spot. Regardless of when you visit, gorilla trekking in Bwindi is always a remarkable experience.
Keep in mind that gorilla permits can sell out quickly, especially during peak seasons. It’s best to book your permits well in advance to secure your spot.
