About Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Bwindi is one of only four national parks in the world home to the endangered mountain gorillas, alongside Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda) and Virunga National Park (DR Congo). It’s also one of Africa’s oldest forests, teeming with a diverse range of wildlife, including over 350 species of birds, 200 tree species and 120 mammal species. The park is home to more than half of the world’s mountain gorilla population, with 15 habituated gorilla families open to trekking.

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi: What to Expect

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi takes place in four sectors:

• Buhoma and Ruhija (northern sectors, close to Queen Elizabeth National Park)
• Rushaga and Nkuringo (southern sectors, near Mgahinga Gorilla National Park)

Each sector offers its own unique experience with different habituated gorilla families available for trekking.

Gorilla Trekking Permit Costs in Bwindi

The price for a gorilla trekking permit in Bwindi is as follows:

• Foreign Non-Residents: $800 USD
• East African Residents: $700 USD
• East African Citizens: $80 USD

Your permit allows you to spend one hour with the mountain gorillas once located.

How to Purchase a Gorilla Trekking Permit

Gorilla permits are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority. You can buy them directly from their headquarters in Kampala or Kisoro for those arriving through Kigali. For convenience, Trek Africa Gorillas can help you purchase your permits in advance, ensuring you secure your spot for your desired trek date.

Gorilla Habituation Experience: A Deeper Encounter

This unique experience, available in the southern part of Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo), allows you to spend 4 hours with semi-habituated gorillas. Unlike regular trekking (which lasts one hour), the habituation experience is more immersive and there are only four permits available per day. Given the high demand, it’s recommended to book at least 2–3 months in advance.

Gorilla Habituation Permit Costs:

• Non-Residents: $1,500 USD
• East African Residents: $1,000 USD
• East African Citizens: $220 USD

Gorilla Trekking vs. Gorilla Habituation Experience

The key difference is the duration. While gorilla trekking gives you one hour with the gorillas, the habituation experience offers four hours. Additionally, trekking is done in groups of 8, while the habituation experience is limited to 4 people per group. Both activities are physically demanding, especially given the steep terrain and unpredictable weather.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

The ideal time for gorilla trekking is during the dry months of January, February, June, July and September. These months offer easier access to the park and better visibility of the gorillas due to reduced vegetation.
