Rwanda Gorilla Treks

Rwanda Gorilla Treks: An Unforgettable Mountain Gorilla Experience

Rwanda offers an unforgettable experience with its Mountain Gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Trekking to see these magnificent creatures is one of Africa’s top wildlife experiences. The gorillas are peaceful and interact with their visitors in a unique way. They often approach trekkers and even greet guides as they pass by, making the encounter truly special.

However, securing a gorilla permit is essential for this once-in-a-lifetime adventure. While the trek to see the gorillas can be challenging, with steep slopes, dense vegetation and occasional slippery conditions, the reward is well worth the effort. The hike through the bamboo forests takes you into the gorillas’ natural habitat, where you can observe them in their peaceful, wild environment.

About Volcanoes National Park: Rwanda’s Gorilla Trekking Paradise

Volcanoes National Park, known as Parc des Volcans in French, is located in Musanze, northeastern Rwanda. This park is not only one of Rwanda’s most famous attractions but also one of the oldest national parks in Africa. It is home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas and Golden Monkeys, as well as a variety of wildlife, including various bird species, monkeys, forest hogs and bushbucks.

Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes five extinct volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabyinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. Gorilla tourism in this region plays a significant role in Rwanda’s economic growth and conservation efforts, with the park attracting visitors from all over the world. In fact, nearly half of the world’s remaining gorilla population resides in this area.

Gorilla Trekking Permits: Availability and Cost in Volcanoes National Park

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park involves visiting one of the park’s habituated gorilla families. Every day, 10 gorilla families are available for trekking and each family can accommodate up to 8 visitors. This means there are 80 permits available daily for gorilla trekking. The chances of encountering the gorillas are incredibly high, with a 99% success rate.

The trekking experience begins early each morning with a briefing at Kinigi (the park headquarters) at 7:00 am, where guides provide important guidelines to ensure your safety and the gorillas’ well-being. Although gorillas share 99% of their DNA with humans, they remain wild animals, so it is important to follow all instructions from your guides. The duration of the trek can vary, taking anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location and movement of the gorillas.

To trek the gorillas in Volcanoes National Park, you must have a gorilla permit for a specific date. The cost of the Rwanda gorilla permit is USD 1,500 for all visitors, regardless of nationality. This permit grants you one hour to observe and photograph the gorillas in their natural habitat.
