In a significant conservation effort, Eastern Black Rhinos were successfully relocated to Serengeti National Park on 21st May 2010 from South Africa. This was part of a long-term project to restore the once-thriving black rhino population in the Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem, which faced a drastic decline due to illegal hunting. Over 40 years ago, the Serengeti was home to an estimated 500 to 700 black rhinos, but their numbers were severely reduced.
The reintroduction of black rhinos to Serengeti National Park is a key step in the recovery of this species and the enhancement of the Serengeti-Mara rhino population. Today, this makes the Serengeti home to one of the largest free-ranging populations of black rhinos in East Africa, contributing significantly to the protection of these endangered creatures.
Beyond rhinos, Serengeti National Park is teeming with diverse wildlife. Visitors can expect to see iconic animals like wildebeest, zebras, lions, giraffes, elephants, cheetahs, buffalo, and hyenas. The park also offers sightings of rarer species such as serval cats, agama lizards, aardwolves, and the elusive leopard. Serengeti is also home to over 500 bird species, including the majestic ostrich and black eagle.
Serengeti National Park offers a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets.
