Embarking on a gorilla trek in Mgahinga National Park is an unforgettable experience. Home to the Nyakagezi group, the only habituated gorilla family in the park, this group consists of over 11 members available for tracking. Despite being Uganda’s smallest national park, Mgahinga is rich in biodiversity and located on the border with Rwanda. It forms part of the great Virunga mountain ranges, alongside Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Mgahinga National Park is distinguished by its three extinct volcanoes: Muhavura, Gahinga, and Sabinyo. Visitors can not only encounter endangered mountain gorillas but also spot golden monkeys and various other species, including birds, reptiles, and forest mammals.
If you’re eager to trek the mountain gorillas of Mgahinga, Trek Africa Expeditions is here to make it happen. Whether you’re traveling solo or in a group, you will need a gorilla permit to participate in this extraordinary adventure. The costs are as follows:
This permit allows you to spend one hour with the majestic mountain gorillas, creating memories to last a lifetime.
Mgahinga has only eight gorilla permits available each day, making early booking essential. To guarantee your spot for trekking, it’s advisable to book your permit at least 3 to 4 months prior to your travel dates. You can block the permits by paying 100%, 70%, or 30% of the total cost in advance. Given the popularity of gorilla trekking, especially during peak season, these permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. For assistance with booking your permits, feel free to contact us.
Choosing the right accommodation is crucial for a comfortable experience. For a touch of luxury, consider options like Gahinga Lodge, Lake Mulehe Safari Lodge, or Lake Chahafi Resort. There are also budget-friendly lodges and camping options available, but advance booking is recommended to secure your stay.
Traveling in a 4×4 Land Cruiser is highly recommended for a comfortable ride to Mgahinga. This option reduces the lengthy drive from Entebbe/Kampala, typically lasting 8-9 hours, to just a 2-hour drive from Kisoro to your lodge in Mgahinga.
