What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

What to Pack for Gorilla Trekking: Essential Tips for Your Adventure

Planning a gorilla trekking experience in Uganda or Rwanda? Preparing for this once-in-a-lifetime journey requires packing the right gear to ensure comfort, safety and an unforgettable adventure. Gorilla trekking involves hiking through dense rainforests with muddy trails and varying weather conditions, so it’s crucial to be well-prepared. Here’s everything you need to know about what to pack and wear during your gorilla trekking safari.

Essential Gear to Bring for Gorilla Trekking in Uganda or Rwanda

1. Comfortable, Sturdy Hiking Boots
Invest in durable waterproof hiking boots with good grip to tackle muddy and slippery trails. The forest can get wet, especially during the rainy season.
2. Long-Sleeved Shirts and Lightweight Trousers
Protect yourself from stinging nettles, biting insects and scratches from undergrowth by wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers. Lightweight, breathable materials are ideal for comfort.
3. Rain Jacket or Poncho
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a tropical rainforest and rain can occur at any time. A waterproof jacket or poncho will keep you dry.
4. Gardening Gloves
These are useful for protecting your hands when grabbing onto branches or vegetation during the trek.
5. Insect Repellent
Mosquitoes and other insects are common in the forest. Bring a strong insect repellent to keep bugs at bay.
6. Hat and Sunscreen
Though the forest canopy provides shade, you might still be exposed to the sun during certain parts of the trek. Protect yourself with a wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen.
7. Reusable Water Bottle
Stay hydrated during the trek by carrying enough water in a reusable bottle.
8. Snacks
Pack light, high-energy snacks like granola bars or dried fruits for a quick energy boost during the trek.
9. Binoculars
Bwindi is not just about gorillas – it’s also a haven for birdwatchers and other wildlife enthusiasts. Binoculars can enhance your experience.
10. Camera and Spare Batteries
Capture unforgettable memories with your camera but remember to turn off the flash when photographing the gorillas.
11. Sweater or Fleece
Early mornings and evenings can be chilly, so a warm sweater is essential.
12. Comfortable Socks
Bring several pairs of high-quality, breathable socks to wear with your hiking boots.
13. Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer
These will come in handy for quick cleaning during your trek.

What to Wear on Your Gorilla Trekking Safari

• Neutral-Colored Clothing
Avoid bright colors that might scare the gorillas or dark colors like black and blue, as they attract tsetse flies. Neutral, earthy tones like khaki, green or brown are recommended.
• Light Layers
Dress in layers to easily adapt to changing temperatures in the forest.
• Avoid Perfume
Strong scents can disturb wildlife, so it’s best to go fragrance-free.

How to Get to Bwindi for Gorilla Trekking

Fly to Kisoro or Kihihi Airstrip, the nearest airports to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Domestic flights are available through companies like Aerolink. From the airstrip, it’s a short drive to your lodge.

Best Time to Go Gorilla Trekking in Uganda and Rwanda

While gorilla trekking is available year-round, the best times to visit are during the dry months of June to August and December to February, as trails are less slippery and easier to navigate.
